I might give 9 another go. I miss the old turn based stuff...I think I read an SE article the other day saying they'd stick with real time battle systems and whatnot. Ugh, not my cup of tea.

I don't really understand this question. Every battle system since the ATB was introduced in 7 has been real time. And LR FF13 is the first non-turn based main entry ever.

I'm not a connoisseur in FF battle systems, and just briefly read over this article.

I'm just saying that for me personally, I didn't care for the battle system implemented in FF13 (Didn't play LR). My hope is that they return to a more traditional battle system in future FFs, even though I don't think they will.

What exactly about it didn't you like? It was the same turn based, ATB system, just with with more cinematic fights (where positioning, placement and the size of the enemies matter).

I still have the first disc memorized. Be sure to steal from bosses. They almost always have awesome weapons.

I never knew that back in the day, so I'm following a nice walkthrough to try and get 100%. Pretty awesome website for old RPGs.

The first set of "Mage Mashers" and "Iron Sword" I got early on, destroyed enemies.

I didn't like the paradigm shifting aspect of the game. I didn't like controlling one character in battle. I just didn't enjoy the game; I think I stopped at that boss right before Orphan and just never had the desire to pick it back up again.

Beautiful game, and wonderful music - just didn't have too much fun.

It's pretty close in ranking with FF6 for me and then a wide gulf for the next closest.

Everything about FF9 is perfect.

That is pretty awesome. Had no idea it existed.

Get it from the tutorial boss!

Paradigm shift is an evolution of the job system, imo. It's also better in every way. Being able to customize your characters and combine classes for whatever strategy you want was a lot of fun.

I don't mind controlling just one character, since you could direct the AI with the paradigm shifts. Better than Gambits, imo.

In lindblum I synthed those Mage mashers to get "the ogre" and now zidane rapes enemies single handedly

I'm not using a guide but I've just been using zidane's first 3 turns to steal from each boss just to make certain I get the good items

I don't like to use guides on my first play through, so I've been pretty tedious searching areas so far, hoping I don't miss anything too important

It took all the fun out of it for me when you end up doing as another poster said:

X X X X X R1 X X X X X X X R1 X X X X, Oh hey I beat it.

You hardly even have to think in the battles.

What battle did you really have to think deeply in any game? Outside of Demon's Souls/Dark Souls and maybe some niche series, you maul over all normal enemies.

I don't really find it any less difficult than previous (and with paradigm shifts, it involves much more strategy) FFs.

shite, you think more preparing for battles in XII than you do in XIII. At least gambits took some thought to setting up.

There are some bosses that are stupidly hard to steal stuff from.

Eh, maybe for certain enemies. I turned gambits off of whoever I was controlling, otherwise, I turned into me nudging my controller in a general direction.

I always hated trying to steal that Ice Staff. I had more trouble stealing from him and the 2nd waltz
