Last thread for me: Top 6 games of the PS4 generation

Wow this generation of games gave us some absolute ducking MASTERPIECES. Just up front I will not have god of war reboot in mine. I understand it’s an extremely popular and if the entire world is to believed is up for game of the entire ps4 era.
6. Nier: Automata
Lot of people might have heard about this but not played it? It looks like a Japanese manage with shirt girls kicking arse with swords and robot companions. And it does. But there’s so much here itd take a novel to get through the deep ness of this narrative and it’s what 5 or so different play through as other perspectives?
5. Final Famtasy 7 Remake
Not much to be said here. It was way too fricking cool. It delivered on 96% of what everyone wanted in stunning fashion
4. Red Dead 2
Simply put the best narrative in a video game I’ve ever seen and shows what the medium can do as a storytelling device
3. Ghost of Tsushima
Sucker punch closed us out with an absolute visual masterpiece with dynamic fluid combat and a gripping tell. They had the gonads to give us free online co op story modes and are now dropping a directors cut with an entire new island mid act 2 you can upgrade to for 19.99 if you own it. What a way to close the year
2. Bloodbourne
If Ghost closed it BB opened it with a BANG o have another thread on this though so say no more
And number 1 : Persona 5 Royal
If you don’t like Jrpgs and just sort of wade around in the hybrid Ubisoft style this will seem an odd pick. But it’s quite simply the best game ever made. From it’s completely unique art style, narrative, dialogue choices, combat, and damn that score. Not to mention it’s at WORST 80 hours of content and to do it all more like 120. Play this game. And yes it’s most common point by detractors is I don’t want a 6 hour tutorial. Do it. Trust me. Just do it.

Witcher 3 would’ve without doubt been by number 7. It’s an amazing game. Visuals still hold good. Gwent of course. It has issue though which to its credit it was close to a launch title.

I’m an Xbox guy first but I still own a PS4 and enjoy picking up the $20 greatest hits titles so I’ll add Horizon Zero Dawn to your list.

Another pretty brilliant game considering sony marketed it as the Witcher 3 dialogue wise and it was made by people who only worked on kill zone. For me though falls way too flat into the Ubisoft model of gameplay. Everything else about it was cool and legit and look forward to the sequel

That was a day one purchase for me, I’ve been playing the PS4 solely since my kids took over both Xb1’s and the series X. Lately I’ve been playing Ace Combat 7.

It’s a shame red dead online is so shite. I also hear fans clamoring for read dead 3 I’m like l
Please god for all that’s holy no. Let a perfect narrative of two games be that.

Dark Souls 3 isa great game. 1 paved the way and was descent but massively over praised. 2 sucked dick. As far as sekeiro I understand what they wanted to do and new time period with just a guy and his blade but I didn’t love it like bloodbourne or dark Souls 3.

All incredible games.
Only thing missing is Witcher 3, imo. To me, it was the masterpiece of gaming this far.

Yeah I actually addressed that in a later post as the one that just got cut. It’s an amazing game without a shadow of doubt but has problems. It’s pacing can be brutal. The physics can be weird. The combat is....well mediocre at best. You’re there for the immersive world of the Witcher and the story that game tells and it does it almost better than anyone ever. I know it was a 2015 game but I feel I left it off because of technical limitations early in the cycle, although I’ll say it still looks great visually. And commend them for competing with bloodbourne for best dlc ever

I think some other good honor mentions are
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Shadow of Colossus Remaster
Phantom Pain
DMC 5
Horizon Zero Dawn
Spider Man
And of course me being a massive Final Fantasy fanatic before 15 anyway, I adored zodiac age remake of 12 an extremely underrated game especially in fantasy where it’s mostly politics and the protagonist is a literal street urchin

This was a great game. Story wise, I thought they hid the bad guy pretty well. I assumed they were introducing him and building up to him being the bad in a sequel game, so it caught me off guard when he appeared as the bad.

The best part was swinging around. No game had ever done ducking world traversing as well as spider man lol.
Although, even though I like Miles Morales as a character, his DLC/Mini sequel felt like a high school writers room concocted a plot got a ps5 tech demo

For me:
1. God of War
2. Sekiro
3. Dark Souls 3
4. Final Fantasy 7 Remake
5. Persona 5 Royal
6. Final Fantasy 15
Close 7th: Nier Automata
I really want to like Bloodborne, but I cannot stand the health item system. Wish it were more like the Dark Souls games with the Estus Flasks. I know that's prob a really stupid thing to complain about, but it bothers the hell out of me that I have to grind for those damn Blood Vials.

Interesting list. I must be the only person on earth who doesn’t like god of war. Final Fantasy 15....meh. When they finally got it right and released the royal edition which included like 3 full short games of dlc for each support character, intercut movie scenes from the film you were supposed to watch before hand, and hopefully you did 6 hours of YouTube anime or you’ll be fricked. After 3 years the final product fully itemized switching characters in battle and story fleshed out and explained I find myself actually liking 15. It did NOT need to be open world though. It’s barren as frick and has worse quest than Ubisoft. I get that kills the road trip thing but whatever. As for bloodbourne you’re not meant to rely on the viles, you’re meant to do two things and if you can do these you’ll feel like thanos. Become a parry expert and utilize the rally system to the max. But even farming blood vials is like 30 minutes in th first stage running a loop from bride through house to lamp.
And btw you can shite on me too ff13 is one of my faves of the series and I love the trilogy

I also highly recommend someone struggling with BB watch a skilled player (I.e someone like myself and many others who’ve beaten the game many times with many builds) run through the starting stage up to cleric beast and Gascogne. You’ll have a much better understanding for how it is supposed to dance and flow
Or watch someone skilled fight Lady Maria. That is truly Bloodbourne and I’d argue all of gaming at its best. It perfectly displays how the game is meant to be played to do your best and get the best results

Yeah, I agree with all you said about FF15. I cannot really explain why I like it so much, but what I do know is that I really enjoyed the story and the character interactions a lot. I also really like how the dungeons are set up (how they actually feel like dungeons instead of the traditional FF-style cave). And all of the music and remixes of past music you can listen to in the car. Mind you, the beginning of the game is really restricting for what you can do and where you can go, so it is a huge turnoff. But once you get access to the monster truck (or whatever the game calls it) and eventually the wings (needed to get to Pitioss Ruins), the game really becomes a lot of fun, at least it did for me. I absolutely loved the post-game for FF15 and it's one of the reasons I like it over a lot of old-school FF games.
Lol I have played FF13 like 3-4 times and really enjoy it. Weirdly enough, I've never played the latter two games of the trilogy. The combat is by far my favorite of the turn-based ATB games. Just so much variety between the different paradigms and party set up. Great music and the visuals were way ahead of its time. Just wish the story and terminology weren't so convoluted.
Yeah, I've started BB at least 3 times and always stop whenever I fight the Blood-Starved Beast. I don't really dislike the game at all. I suppose I've been too reliant on Estus Flasks that I blow away all the blood vials and then say screw it
. It's more frustrating if anything. I just want them to release the game on PC so I don't have to grab my PS4 lol. But I definitely plan to brute force my way through Bloodborne at some point. Is it safe to say its more centralized in one area, similarly to lets say Castlevania, vs spread out into different areas like DS3? That's the impression I got at least, but I always thought it'd be cool if that were the case.
Edit: A friend of mine told me there was a leak about a Bloodborne remaster being released for PC and PS5, so fingers crossed.
