Kotaku has the official name of the next CoD: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Not to be confused with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
Kotaku
Rumored announcement date is next Thursday, May 30th.
Another rumor is that there will be a single player campaign that takes place somewhere between the 1st through 3rd installment, but as a different character entirely. No rumors about multiplayer, yet.

The first Modern Warfare was called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, so it’s only natural that the fourth Modern Warfare is called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Confused yet? That’s video games for you.
News of this year’s strangely named Call of Duty leaked out via YouTuber LongSensation this morning. Activision has been showing the game to press and “influencers” (YouTubers and streamers) for a week or two now, so a leak like this was inevitable. Kotaku has not seen the game or agreed to any embargo, but we’ve heard from many sources connected to the Call of Duty world that it is indeed called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and that it’s a “soft reboot” of the first one, developed by Infinity Ward for release this fall. It’ll be heavy on troubling, realistic emotional moments, very much inspired by the controversial No Russian campaign in Modern Warfare 2 that allowed the player to gun down civilians.
Kotaku also broke the news on Saturday that Activision’s mega-popular military shooter series has been in flux, with Black Ops studio Treyarch taking over lead development of COD 2020 from Sledgehammer and Raven.
Video games are absurd. We can expect to see more from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare soon (likely next week).

Well that's pretty stupid to name it that.
I haven't bought a COD in years but I may check it out if this is the case. Those early games were way better than the more recent ones.

The first two were still made by proper Infinity Ward before all the important people left the company.

The latest God of War was called...God of War.

Masterpiece of a game, but also dumb

Why is it dumb? I'd rather them keep it simple then come up with a forced sub theme.
Plus, I would have figured the fanboys pining for old school COD should be creaming themselves over this.

I think because that game was more like a soft reboot and there isn’t as many installments.

Should have gone with the obvious:
Call of Duty: Modern Fourfare

This might be the case here as well. They know the majority of the fanbase has been unhappy over the years, and they brought back Bowling (right?), so this might be a return to basics in a sense.
IMO, the one thing ALL modern shooters need to incorporate is power sliding. Is this was in COD4 Remastered I would probably play it more. I hate when that's not available.

Will it have battle royal?

Meh, for me, MWR just felt slow in general. A power slide wouldn’t even fix it. BF4 is perfect. A remaster if 4 with some updates textures would be my modern shooter wet dream. Oh, take out all the IR scopes too.

Speed of gameplay was a real noticeable issue with MWR. Felt really sluggish.

No. BF3 was and BC2 even more so.

I'll say it again, if they had thrown a few of the BF3 maps in a DLC pack for BF4, it would have been the goat shooter. No hyperbole.
BC2 is pretty dated. I could still play the crap out of 4 when there are people on.

I can agree with this. It feels like you’re running in mud or quicksand. You can’t get where you’re going fast enough.
