Yeah.. i had to apply a specific oil and use other alchemy stuff before every single encounter. And the inventory management screen kind of sucked so it was a bit of a chore.

Made it to Velen, met the Baron. Really liking it. They did a really good job with the open world concept.

You HAVE to do side quests and level up, find new potions/abilities etc while advanving the story. I just dont have the time to play through that way and i want to see the ending.

Once you get to Skellige you really don't have to do the side quests all that much, even on Death March. You get to where the main quests even turn grey at points in Skellige if you are doing all the side stuff up until that point.

Agreed that going from DM to the next difficulty down makes things extremely easy by comparison.

I have to figure out my approach to mixing in side quests and point of interest with the main quest. I feel like I've been doing enough, but I'm two levels behind my current main quest.

I recently finished a play through on Death March and both DLC's. The scaling issue is messed up in the main game. You will be over-leveled pretty much no matter what by the time you finish the game. When the first DLC starts up though...watch the F out...lol....they scaled up everybody in the DLC's! But it seemed to balance out well. Was strong enough by the end of each that I felt like a badass again on each.

I find the contracts for killing big nasty shite much more fun than the secondary quests

The secondary quests are interesting. They do a good job of painting how fricked up that world is. Really, I like how they handled all of the quests. The undiscovered places are fun to break up the quest stages.
