I’m not arguing the merits of these games, but you can now get both Fortnite and Paladins on the Switch. For today’s younger games, this is huge. My kid is the envy of all his friends because he can play fortnite anywhere on his Switch and now can do same with Paladins. I was, honestly, surprised to see these make the Switch so quickly as there seemed to be hardly any cross platform emphasis with the U.

Anyway, if this sort of viral fad gaming continues to proliferate and the Switch continues to have these titles, I could see the console really taking off.

They are also putting the mobile moba "arena of valor" on the switch.

I have been playing AOV a bunch here lately just because its far more convenient.

It’s a major shift for Nintendo. Nintendo owners have always kind of been left out of all the social online gaming crazes like CoD and such. But hey! They had Mario.

With the new cloud gaming or whatever you want to call it, the Switch is really a next level device.

I can see why it’s appealing. I sold my switch because I just don’t game enough anymore to justify having a $300 game sitting in my drawer collecting dust.

What is really taking off? It's selling very well and has been selling well since it launched.

It won't surpass PS4 sales but it's guaranteed to pass X1.

The Switch has changed the future of gaming. Most next gen consoles will be based around the portability aspect that the Switch was able to do. It’s almost like we’re going backwards in a way.

Doubtful, at least for a few more gens until tech really is more equal. There's only so much you can do with a single screen, eventually, gains will taper off and this may end up being a market "the portable single screen game device that connects to your tv."

But by that time, companies will be into something crazier, and I don't think it's necessarily VR as we know it now, but immersive room/screen walls, etc.

I'm pretty stoked about Fortnite on it. I've been saying for awhile now if there's a multi Plat game I want I'm probably going to lean to the Switch since I can play it whenever I want more easily.

I'd be drooling about Destiny on the switch. Running strikes and Crucible on the go would be awesome to knock out weekly activities on.

I would argue that the Switch hasn’t changed anything, but it has anticipated it to some degree. That being said, I can also agree with the comment that this is merely a bridge/waypoint to the “future” and not really the future.

Kevin Kelly’s chapter on “screening” in his book The Inevitable probably does a good job of showing what the fairly near future holds. Basically ubiquitous screens and varying levels of portability and immersion with those screens.

I also love how just bringing up a Nintendo product in even a vaguely positive but more speculative light illicits downvotes. Lol.

Where are yall playing games while on the go? The bus? Airplanes? I really only play games at home so I never understood this. Do yall travel a lot making it easier to hook up in your hotels?

My kid takes his to his friends’ houses. Also, during summer, when he comes to work with me. Also, when we travel, which we do a lot.

I don’t really game much, but I’m interested in tech trends so I observe gaming trends.

Yea, do not take my question in any negative way at all. I was just interested. I mean growing up the gameboy was great for road trips and stuff like that.

I wasn't sure if the console itself is a lot smaller which would make it easier to travel with. The xbone is like carrying a brick from fort knox. Ps4 can be as well. I haven't really handled the switch before in person.

Also I COMPLETELY forgot that the screen can attach to the controllers. The few times I've seen the controllers they were connected together without a screen.

NOW I GET IT *Fry from Futurama voice*

Well have you seen some of the Nintendo fans here? They can wear on you.

But to your question.

The console has already taken off. But it is slowing down. Sales have not been as expected for it lately. It seems the craze is slowing and not increasing. Perhaps Fortnite will boost it some but the better way to play that is still on a more poweful console or PC. Switch is locked at 30 fps, so playing cross play is at a disadvantage. Lets go Pokemon and Smash coming out this holiday may boost it's sales to the "take off" level once again, we shall see.

Nintendo Stock is shooting down right now, if you feel it is about to take off you may want to buy.

I think this will be huge for the switch. Sucks for me because I was hoping for a price drop or some kind of combo deal. Switch with smash bros for $300 but I know that isn't happening.
