Is the Star Ocean series worth it?

I enjoy all the newer games but every year or 2 i find myself yearning for a good old fashioned JRPG. Played and platinumed Legend of Dragoon last year and had a great time doing so.
Just finished up ff7 remake (fantastic game) and am in the mood for something more old school before tackling rebirth which I heard is a massive game. Was scrolling through the PS store last night and noticed the Star ocean series on there with 1 and 2 being recent remasters that look great.
Is this series worth the time? Should I just play 1 and 2 and leave the others alone? Or should I start in chronological order and do The Last Hope which is a prequel, then 1 and 2, then the rest? From what I’ve read all the 3D entries are kinda lame but 1 and 2, specifically 2, are some of the best old JRPGs out there.
Other options other than star ocean would be octopath traveler 1 and 2, the saga frontier remaster, sea of stars, or Eiyuden Chronicles

I’ll give my opinion as someone who never played one up until about a month ago. Got Second Story R and am somewhere in part 2.
As far as I know, the story feels pretty standalone. There might be extra information about the game universe in the first one that applies to this one but nothing that impacted my enjoyment so far. Granted I don’t know what I don’t know.
As for JRPG, my biggest surprise was the combat. The combat is like a 2D-HD button mash with specials and very basic dodges. Most of the RPG elements came from the missions and stat building which is where most of my fun is coming from. There’s a lot of min/maxing with this feature but I’m on one of the easier difficulties so it really hasn’t mattered much. I do have suggestions for what to get first if you are interested.
Overall, I’d say this one is worth a shot. The story has been a 3/5 so far but there’s been way more intrigue come part 2.
Edit: sea of stars was one of my favorites in recent memory, despite a few hiccups. So that’s a good alternative.

I think Star Ocean is a solid series, albeit one that hasn't gotten enough love in recent years.
I would skip the first game in the series. While in 2, you play as the son of one of the party members in the first game, the events in the first game aren't mentioned at all. The first game is also very heavy on backtracking.
I will also say that that particular party member doesn't get treated very well, in the second game but that's all I will say
3 is good, but I never finished it. I like 4 a lot despite it having objectively the worst cast of party members I've ever seen in a game.

Even thinking about Lymle makes me hate myself and the world. Really fun game but my god she is horrible.

She may be the worst offender, but it's not just her

From what I understand the new HD version of 4 allows you to use the Japanese voice actors which makes a huge difference lol
I have some thinking to do because I also noticed wild arms 1-3 and Grandia 1 and 2 are now on the ps store also. All these old JRPGs that were once hard to get ahold of are all now being made available which is great but overwhelming lol

It's not just her, Meracle and Sarah suck too but they are far below Lymle in my level of annoyance.
I did really like Bacchus though and I thought Faize was fine.

It makes a huge difference. The english voice acting is awful.
I think the series is definitely worth your time. There are great remakes for the first two games in the series and I think you really should start there. Both are old school in combat so as long as you're good with that, then go for it.
There's a demo for Star Ocean 2 that allows you to play the first 2 hours of the game essentially (with progress carry over).
