Considering the license though, I would have to say Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game launched some technical issues caused by the awful, unfished game engine, but it was a solid enough foundation to build upon.
And retail at launch was one of the last BioWare games with great writing, which made it even more frustrating. I wouldn’t argue it’s the biggest flop per se, but to me it’s the biggest disappointment. KOTOR tee’d it up to absolutely print money and they fricked it

Anemic content since launch with full on paid "expansions" that are on par with live update from FFXIV.
FFXIV 3.0 is about to be on the list. Yoshi-P is a beaten man and they have completely milked the golden goose dry for no reason. It is as relevant a case study as 1.0, but in how to completely ignore everything your player base is telling you while offering less and less content while they watch their monthly subscriptions fees go to fund a portfolio of projects that keep bombing. It’s almost like they have a kink for teetering on bankruptcy

Star Wars Galaxies should have been much better

Galaxies was amazing until they started reworking things to force Jedi into the game.

The Matrix Online and SWG were both great, one eventually succumbed to back office shenanigans and the other just eventually faded from age.

WOW killed that game sadly.

WoW killed a lot of games.

Especially the WoW-killer genre.

It was wonderful until Sony fricked it up with the combat upgrade and the anti-decay kits. Best crafting game ever and really there's no second place.

I guess it is kind of like SW:TOR from the standpoint of the publisher isn't reinvesting the title's profit back into the game itself. Rather, they are using it to fund other projects.

Is it really that bad though? It seems like FFXIV's biggest problem right now is that the content is just "more of the same."

In World of Warcraft, they add new mechanics with certain updates/expansions. The downside to that is that they are often ignored/removed come the next expansion cycle.

FFXIV could use something new to spice things up, but they have always done a great job at making sure old content stays relevant.

This x1000. I really wanted it to do well. The combat was so much more engaging than WoW. The group content was a lot of fun imo. Dungeons and bosses were much more challenging on average than what WoW or other mmos were offering. Unfortunately the rest of the game was about as fun as licking sandpaper.

Regular everyday mobs in a random zone could easily kill you if you weren't paying attention, interrupting damaging skills, rolling out of the way of attacks. That was cranked up to 10 in most dungeons and boss fights. This level of difficulty is great for group content and raids. It was extremely tedious for questing and grinding though. Still, I wish the game hadn't fizzled out so quickly.

Ever since experiencing the "magic" of WoW (for me, that was from Vanilla through Wotlk, Cataclysm and beyond mostly changed things for the worse imo), I've been waiting for another mmo game to recapture and expand upon that experience. Sadly, every other mmo that I've tried has failed to recreate that experience for me. Probably no other ever will. C'est la vie.

Sorry for the long post. Just had a moment of nostalgia. I don't encounter many other people who played WildStar or even know what WildStar was.
