Agreed

I won’t bore everyone with reasons but I’ll just say I still enjoy open world games knowing I’ll never come close to completing them. MAYBE I can bang out the main story but that isn’t really the point of an open world is it? As always I’m several years behind but recently started Last of Us and like you said, the linearity can be refreshing

Edit: all that said and I’m firing up Elden ring right now

Yup. And I’ll fire up elden ring again and again in hope that it will be different because I WANT to enjoy it.

I did beat HZD. The story was great but I loved the combat so very much. I loved it so much I wanted to never stop being in combat so I did try to do as much as possible.

God of War does “open world” really well. It makes it feel big even though it’s not really. Same for Horizon I think.

BoTW problem is lack of dungeons built into the open world. But instead 100 shrines or whatever. Those get old and the aesthetic just bleh. I hope they go away from that. Just felt like filler again. I just want to find some heart pieces.

I feel like the scale being that big for Zelda took away from what the franchise does best.

I do think there are positives in BoTW to build upon but it def should not have won GoTY over HZD. If it didn’t have Zelda attached to the name it’s no question.

I blame the video game media/reviews for this.

Open world games are almost a genre IMO, but review sites treat it as a feature. Eventually, high game reviews depended upon the game being "open world" to be rated highly. This forced game designers to implement it in all types of games that don't necessarily need it.

I like open world games, but I also like linear games that keep me focused. I'm one of those people like the OP that will never finish BOTW because I am too lazy to do the story since I can play the game and do other things.

I find open world to be overdone, if only because it means an investment in games that really don’t deserve that level of attention in a lot of cases. Even on classics like GTA3 I got tired of chasing shite like packages around the end of the second island because having to play treasure quest to find them all got annoying as frick.

I’m more likely to play something which may be more repetitive but has challenge to it and story that will develop over the course of the game, such as an X-Com style strategy shooter or a Roguelike such as Hades.

I blame publishers like EA who have been notorious for edicts from above with regard to shoehorning content into games that don’t need them like open world elements and multiplayer into series that were doing fine, such as Mass Effect. Edicts from above helped turn ME3 and Andromeda into messes that killed the franchise and the studio involved.

Ohh I also think GTA/RD2 does open world awesome as well. GTA always seems alive and the driving is just fun in general. They give you tons of cool/UNIQUE things to do.

Feels more like a sandbox to me. But I will never finish these game likely or anytime soon.

Agreed, great games but it is a little intimidating to have a game which requires such a time commitment to play with regards to widget-hunting or doing missions.

I may keep a few of those around but I find that having other stuff which is more pick up and play works for me better.

Hence why I haven’t played a serious RPG in years. I don’t have time for that shite anymore. Good games but I don’t have 20+ hours, let alone more, to spend chasing rabbits to unlock hidden characters and do side quests, especially if I have to spend time getting reoriented every time I have a long gap in gameplay.

You have a point. I’m a Fromsoft fanatic and while I enjoyed it, Elden Ring suffered from being open world.

That said, you need to take ES down from the pedestal - Oblivion is the only one close to worth getting into.

FF16 looks like a return to the glory days of Cecil, Bartz, and Locke.
