because why play the new game?
I started with a magician and ran around a bit to get a feel for it after finishing DS2. What do I need to know early on? upgrade path? build?

never ran a sorcery build for Demon's, so i dont know what to tell you. make sure to revisit older worlds down the road.
i usually go 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 1-3, 1-4
I like to knock out stonefang and valley (2 and 5) early because they're the two worst worlds. tower of latria and shrine of storms (3 and 4) are some of the best the series has to offer, and 1-3 and 1-4 are just a religious experience. so incredibly well-done
in tower of latria, make sure you slaughter the guy on the balcony area in the cathedral that is sitting in the glowing rune. dont listen to him
try and get the Northern Regalia.
Make sure you go back and open the mausoleum in 1-1 once you get the key

That spider boss sucked. I tried to start playing where I left off the other day and got my but kicked. So I quit.

I remember from my first attempt at a play through I quit at that boss. It was obvious though with magic you could cheese him. Join me in this playthrough, get back into it.

Spider boss is pretty simple. It's either a fire damage reduction shield or ring you can get in that same world. When it charges up for it's large fire attack, run all the way back to the entrance and duck off to the right (it telegraphs it pretty easily). Run back with your shield up to eat any fireballs coming your way (or roll through them). Keep your shield up when you get close up, block the melee attack and it'll rest its legs or something. That's when you unload on it. Rinse and repeat.

I cant play again until Sunday night, daaaaaaaamn. Weapon recommendation for a spell user? Should I use a weapon with fire or something like that? Is there enchanting?

Have your spellcasting gear in one hand, with an alt to something that you can use quickly.

I would have it as an alt for your left hand. Best to have something that doesn't cost anything for taking out easy/single enemies.
