Ill provide a legit reply:

The concept of "permadeath" is very thrilling. You dont respawn. Its over. You lose everything. Its GG

The adrenaline rush in sketchy situations is what fuels gamer's mind. They enjoy it and love it

Yes, but the survival fad is what triggered the battle royale fad. ARMA 2 DayZ got people playing ARMA and that mixed with the popularity of Hunger Games.

So tying them together with the explosion in popularity they received is fine.

To the OP, people found an easy way to make money, it's not that hard to understand. That's why there are so many. Blame the people that keep buying them or paying for the microtransactions.

Lol all you do is PUBG and that barely classifies. You have no say here.

my buddies and I refer to this as "crack". Looting is addicting but you play for those high pressure moments that give you that rush. it is like crack coacaine

This I get, I mean I played Diablo 2 hardcore on and off.

However the Battle Royale type survivor games strike me as the opposite of this feeling. You land, you die quick, you queue up again, you land, you run around do nothing for 10 minutes, then you die, then you queue up again, etc.

Every move is calculated and every game plays out different.

Getting from A to B and finding a weapon is a lot more exciting when you know everyone else is trying REAL hard to kill you.

You eventually figure out what works, live longer, and the stakes get higher the longer you live...multiplying the adrenaline rush

I played a lot of hardcore d2 and lost multiple lvl 75+ chars, so i can relate a bit further.

Yeah it sucked losing hours and hours of xp and items if you didnt have loot corpse and a friend..but thats what made it fun.

With battle royal, obviously "dying" is less punishing than dying in d2.. but thats what makes it appealing to the masses. Just queue again and try to do better.

You get the adrenaline rush instantly in Battle royal , compared to not really being invested in hardcore d2 until hours and hours of time was put in.

And for PUBG, the looting process makes it a little more random. Sure you can join new games much faster, but it may be three games before you find that sniper or attachment you want, the armor you need, get the circle to pop where you need it to. Nothing at all like COD or any other game where you choose your loadout and have infinite lives

I guess I don't "get" them either. I've tried many of them. I've played GRAV, ARK, Subnautica, Minecraft, Landmark, and some others. The screenshots of all the cool crap you can build looks amazing, but it's mostly a slog to be able to build all that stuff.

I also find certain mechanics like hunger, oxygen, etc to be annoying when I'm just trying to explore.

Subnautica might be my favorite though. It didn't feel like there was too much grinding involved. Within a couple hours, I had an underwater base and a jetski thing.

The best thing about subnautica is you can tear down your base and you get ALL of the supplies back. That is huge. I always start in one spot, move to another spot and then finish the game at another spot. Makes it less of a grind.

The scanner room also helps beyond belief.

No The Forest?

Rust just exited early access.

The Forest which has a complete story line is ending EA in April.

Both are fun but you need a group to roll with on Rust for Max fun. The Forest is a hoot single or multi. And with the last few updates have really added to the combat. Allowing you to duct tape a flashlight to your bow, gun, or chainsaw.

I die too quick in the long Dark. Every decision I make just makes it way worse.
