Can someone explain how a student can be a 5th year but has never stepped foot in Hogwarts before? Is that something my wife will find out later?
5th year is a grade level, not a descriptor. It’s the equivalent of saying that you’re (roughly) a “Junior” in HS in the US. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t go into much detail beyond emphasizing that the PC has a tremendous affinity for magic, and that there are other story relevant characters who also started at Hogwarts as “5th years”.

I thought they would explain it in game but I don’t remember hearing or seeing a clear answer. The devs talked about it only a little before the game came out and apparently some witches and wizards are homeschooled instead of going to Hogwarts or some of the other wizarding schools. It’s rare but it happens.
ETA: apparently they left it intentionally ambiguous so you could guess and come up with your own reasons why you don’t start until 5th year. Some popular ones I’ve seen are: being homeschooled, transferring from another magical school, being an orphan and your magical abilities not showing up until later in life, which apparently is canon and can happen.

I don’t think it was home schooling, because the game starts with the PC knowing nothing. Fig literally has to teach us lumos, which I imagine is one of the first spells a child is taught. The conceit of the game is that we are attuned to a type of magic no one else can see or control, but we have zero magical training. It’s such a stretch that it makes sense to me why they didn’t even try to explain it

I still haven’t done the first trial, but it’s clear to me that this should’ve been the movies they made instead of Fantastic Beasts.

Love the story. Just got done with second trial.

For those playing through, I suggest getting through the first trial relatively quickly. Lot of basic gameplay mechanics locked behind it, which is going to cause a significant amount of backtracking. And to my knowledge, there isn't a single quest that disappears/fails/etc because of time or main quest progression.

According to Fextralife, it's a random drop.
I have it, but couldn't tell you where I got it.

I have a huge amount of gear and somehow not that one.

So what are yall assigning talent points to?

I grabbed the first three Stealth, and focused the rest on Core, Dark Arts and Spells with a build centered around curse spreading and amplified/shared curse damage.

Exploring before getting Alohomora is frustrating. Exploring before getting the broom is painful.

I wound up trying the final boss with only 4 health pots.
Couldnt seem to get his pattern down as to which attacks were throwable. Wound up abandoning and now I have max pots and am working on ancient magic meter before I go back.

I'm a Ravenclaw and I have put nothing in Dark Arts or Room of Requirement (yet), but I'm only level 20. Just went with things that actually seemed useful.. though the curse stuff seems pretty OP if you get the full Dark Arts talents.

Exploring without Alohomora II is frustrating I need to find those moon statues

If I recall correctly, there are 9 moons in Hogsmead and something like 6-7 can be acquired with A1. Combined with the few you can snag around Hogwarts and you should be able to easily unlock A2.

I’m working on A3 and it’s so damn tedious

I haven’t started yet, but my current plan is to pop around to each village and grab the one available, see how far it gets me. More traveling, but easier to find. Then I’ll figure it out from there

Just use the Fextralife Wiki to find the statues.
Some stuff is just too damn tedious and boring to do w/o a guide.

Literally same. Don’t even want to say how long it took me. None of your stats matter against Ranrok. It’s all about timing. The only Souls like boss in the game for me. Very frustrating because it felt like it would switch things up after you thought you learned the pattern. I’d go in with at least a dozen health pots. It’s possible to do it without them, because I did, but it would be a lot more enjoyable if I had more.
