This is the first HDTV I have ever had so I'm not very familiar with them. For some reason when I run my ps3, the picture on the TV looks really bad. Very grainy and jagged looking images make the picture look awful. The TV is a Insignia 26" 16:9 Widescreen LCD TV. Another person is my household has the same TV so I hooked my ps3 up to that one. Having the same problems with it as well. So it can't be just a bad TV. Do I need the HDMI cables for the ps3 to make my picture look good. Even so I don't get why it looks like that even without the HD???

What type of cable are you using now? For a hi-def TV you definitely need an HDMI cable to get the best quality. I'm not sure what kind of cable comes with the PS3 but if I had to guess it's probably standard RCA cables (yellow, white, and red plugs). The HDMI cable will make a big difference if that's the case.

Yea thats what I have now. The wierd thing is I have a older TV that isn't HD and rather old. My PS3 looks fine on that one. No jagged grainy images or anything. Just don't get why this one even without HD looks so bad.

Yea you're not going to get an HD quality image from just a yellow connector. Definately look into getting the PS3 HDMI connector.

Yep that's because older TVs run at a much lower resolution than the newer HD ones. Those RCA plugs give you the lowest quality out of the 3 "main" types of cables. Even picking up a component cable (red, blue & green plugs) will give you some additional quality, but an HDMI cable is the only way to go to take full advantage of the resolution the PS3 provides...

You can find them cheaper if you shop around online, but I remember reading a lot of bitching about Sony not including an HDMI cable to begin with. Why sell a system (especially at those kinds of prices) without giving you everything you need to take advantage of it?

Yea, that is wierd. At least microsoft gives you a component cable with the 360 out the box.

Here's an example of a lot cheaper one, if you can wait for it to be delivered...

Even better, check out Monoprice

All you really need is 28 or 26 AWG in whatever length (usually 6' is plenty if your components are all together). Either way, you shouldn't have to spend more than $10 on a decent HDMI cable. Don't let anyone ever tell you that you need Monster or some $120 piece of crud that will look 99.999% identical. Do research on the internet and you will find Monoprice recommended almost universally for cables.

On the other hand, if you need it sooner than that - walmart may just be your best bet if you don't mind eating the extra 20 bucks or so.

Your cable is not the problem. You neeed to let the ps3 recognize what kind of tv it's hooked up to.To do this, turn off the ps3.
Press and hold the power button on the unit until it beeps the second time.It will then find the optimal resolution to display to.
Hope this helps.

The cable IS the problem as far as HD goes, hes trying to use a composite cable, which does not display HD resolutions.

his cable is not the problem, yes a hdmi cable will make a big difference, but he shouldn't have the problems he is with normal cables. try what he poster above said, if that doesnt work do a google search and it will find a message board that tells you how to sink your ps3 wiyh your new tv.

This is simply not true. I have composite cables going from my cable HD box to my 50" plasma right now.

You sure you're using COMPOSITE cables and not COMPONENT? Composite is the old-style red, white, and yellow RCA plugs, and are not capable of delivering an HD signal. If you truly are using a composite cable with that setup, I would strongly recommend you upgrade at least to a component cable. There's no way to really prove it to you without looking at it yourself, but surely you realize that a much better video signal can be split between 3 cables than coming down 1 yellow cable?

HDMI > Component > Composite

Also, an HDMI cable delivers a digital signal, where component and composite cables deliver an analog one. That means that a conversion has to take place from the digital signal coming off your satellite/cable box/whatever, then it has to be converted back to digital when it reaches your TV. This (depending on the quality of the converters) can make a large difference. No conversion needs to take place when using an HDMI cable.

I stand corrected DesertFox. COMPONENT cables are being used. But check this out. When I first purchased my TV HDMI cables were a few days away as there was no way I was giving Best Buy $70 bucks. My first configuration was with component cables. A few days later my HDMI cable was delivered by UPS.

After connecting the HDMI and Component up at the same time I would switch back and forth between the two. There was NO difference in quality.

Hey, check this out. ALL CABLE BOXES COMPRESS SIGNALS so you wouldn't see a difference in the picture. Now, hook a blu-ray player up to a TV with 1080p and switch between cables and come back and be a smart arse about this shite.
