Not at all been playing through Mass Effect on EA’s service.
Want to try some emulators but don’t know where to start as it’s the one side of gaming I’ve never dabbled in. Steam Deck is making me want to though.

That’s the main reason I broke down and ordered (might get it by Christmas).
Current portable emulation isn’t great - to illustrate it takes a New 3DS to run SNES perfectly. Same price as the base Deck, which I’ve heard can be configured for near flawless all the way up to PS2.

Emulation is a piece of cake with Emudeck. You can even run a lot of Switch games, although not many run very smoothly. Wii U games run great, though.

I'm not emulating on mine, but to answer a few questions in here:
No, it's not locked to Steam. There's a desktop mode that runs on Linux. You can DL non-workshop mods for your games and get them running.
The "tested" games are not where it ends - you can DL non-Valve version of Proton that supports more games that they couldn't get the rights to support on the Deck.

I plan on doing a fair bit of emulation. Just curious about performance with breath of the wild. Looking forward to playing elden ring mobile as well.
Hopefully the Cemu mods for the game still work as well.

You'll have to install the mods via DeskTop moe, bu any mods should work. I'm able to use The Convergence on DS3, so anything should work.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm sad over the failure of yet another streaming console, but I wouldn't buy anything first generation product from Google at this point.

The BOTW mods are a bit different, as they are installed in CEMU, but I'm sure there is a way. Turning the weapon breaking way down makes the game a lot more enjoyable.

This thing is awesome. Already dropped it, which was a second of panic. Ordered a temporary case for it until the dbransds one is fixed and shipping. But man Elden Ring looks amazing.

It really is an incredible device. If not for becoming unaccustomed to using a controller over the past 10 years or so, I would play everything on the Deck. Anyone that doesn't mind using a controller (a pretty great one and highly customizable one at that), should fall in love with it.
