Has a sequel ruined a series earlier games for you like AC Origins has for me?

Assassin's Creed 2 is GOAT for me. Loved the Desmond story before it vanished up it's own arse, music is fantastic, and I love the setting. I realized recently that I had played a bunch of AC games but only finished a few of them. I decided I was going to play through all of them as part of a fandom journey, experience the good and the bad (all except the first game). I beat AC2 again last year so I started on Brotherhood and..............painful isn't the right word. I know the AC games always had shoddy mechanics, but it borders on unplayable. But it was something I could always look past until I played Origins (currently in the beginning of Odyssey). By far the best playing games of the series and the most fun I've had with them. And there is actual stealth. I had completely forgotten that the early AC games didn't even give you the ability to crouch. Stealth game?

I hate that I probably won't be able to stomach those early entries, but how do you go back? I know nostalgia is a powerful blinder, but I got a few hours into Brotherhood and simply decided "this isn't fun at all".

Has a later game in a beloved series ever done that to you?

Honorable mention, the shooting mechanics in Fallout 4 are pretty decent, so every time I've tried to give 3 and NV another go, hard stuff. I want to experience those games again at some point (Bethesda, do good by your fanbase for the awful 76 experience and remaster one of these games), but it's a chore.

Maybe I don't have the stomach for older games anymore like a lot of you do.

Medal of honor pacific assault ruined the series then the one that came out a few years ago killed it

I don't think that's what I'm talking about.

ETA If I did a poor job of explaining it, a recent game that is so good that it makes playing the earlier/original games almost impossible for you.

I'm driving on i10 heading into the CBD.

Are you saying AC Origins being so good that it makes past installments worse?

I agree with this statement. A game that didn't ruin past installments but changed how I looked at them was the item and exploration systems in Breath of the Wild. I want to explore in that detail where I find myself pissed I can't go to a point like in BoTW.

Got it.

I also feel like I can't go back to play the GoW games. The new God of War was my first interaction with the franchise. It renders past installments cartoons.

To me, the AC games are divided into three categories: Apples, Oranges, and Grapes.

Apples consist of AC1 through AC Rogue.

Grapes consist of AC Unity through AC Syndicate.

Oranges consist of Origin and Odyssey.

Those games, when divided up that way, all share common elements but are different enough from one another that it doesn't feel like abandoning clunky mechanics for a more streamlined experience quite like jumping from Mass Effect 1 to 2/3 but delivering on a different type of game.

That's why it's easy for me to go back to earlier AC games even though I've played and enjoyed the last two.

I would also say that Odyssey is barely an AC game. That doesn't make it bad, but it scratches a different itch than the old AC games.

Now that it has been patched, Unity might actually be the best game from the standpoint of making you feel like an actual assassin. You can crouch, your character is not a god at melee combat, and there are very few moments of instant fail stealth. In Unity, the assassination missions are the centerpiece of the game. You've got multiple ways to tackle every assassination mission.

To answer your question though I might be struggling to come up with anything. To a degree there's always some aspect of an older game in the franchise that I can come back to whether it be the storyline or nostalgia. The closest thing I can think of might be GTA 3/Vice City.

I played Dark Souls series backwards. I played 3, then 2, then 1.

And then I tried Demon Souls on PS3. Dark Souls was such a huge improvement over Demon Souls, I'm finding it difficult to keep my interest.

I tried playing the first Resident Evil on PS4 after already playing RE2 and 4 when they came out. I am pretty used to the weird controls but RE1 was just too much for me. The almost complete lack of ammo, forcing you to make tight moves to dodge enemies, is game ruining to me. The knife is completely worthless, unlike in RE4 where I used it a good bit.
