Was GTA 4 pretty good? I haven't played GTA since PS2

Only way I'm buying this is if I don't have to go on dates and crap like that.
I want to go out and do jobs, kill shite, and earn street credit. That's it!

GTA IV got some flak for the departure from the cartoonish nature of the predecessors. It focused more on story-telling and gritty reality of what you do. I agree that going on dates and shite like that was annoying but you only had to go on one date if I remember correctly. Certainly not any more annoying than the working out/eating metagame in San Andreas.

After San Andreas was so incredible I started to get worried and my fears came to fruition. They went ahead and made GTA IV far too "real" if that makes any sense. The driving wasn't as fun and the tedious tasks were ridiculous. Maintaining relationships was an absolute joke. I played for awhile then quit because it got so obnoxious, then finally picked it up back up again and my first mission was to go to a coffee shop and check e-mail. I never played that shite again.
They need to reinsert some of the more ridiculous aspects. Saints Row is embracing this and while I don't want GTA to go to that extent, I'd like some of the fun back.

I am of the opposite opinion. I liked the detailed nature of GTA IV city opposed to the three major cities that were pretty much dead and had expanses of absolutely nothing in-between them. I wasn't a big fan of the cartoon nature of the predecessors because it tried to straddle the fence of realistic/over-the-top. You have to go all-out insanity (Saints Row) if you are doing that, so they went realistic and attracted a new audience. Yeah the interaction/email was a bit of a chore but if you actually go through and read what is in the game it adds a huge layer of satire in addition to the TV/Radio side.

I guess it's just different tastes. I just felt like Vice City and San Andreas had a good balance of zaniness while still being based somewhat in reality, and then IV brought it way down to Earth. Everything just felt slower I guess. Hard for me to explain.

Not hard to understand at all. The motion mechanics and driving physics are so out there, it feels weird sometimes

I also like it going towards a gritty, more realistic feel.

Most fans want to see the return of the customization and RPG elements that were present in GTA: SA.
GTA has always had a ridiculously high production value, with engrossing narratives and characters. Rockstar likely spends more time writing lines for various radio stations than other developers spend writing an entire story.
It really started with Vice City. The writing and voice acting were simply brilliant, and these traits have been present in subsequent GTA games.
The concept of relationships was definitely annoying in IV, and they likely won't return for 5. If they can add in some of those RPG elements from SA, though, I think this could be the best GTA game yet.
