Shadow of the Colossus is a must play.
It's such a niche type game I'm guessing it being free will expose a ton of people to it for the first time and a lot of people will be blown away.

And then they need to get Last Guardian.

I've seen it before and it looks really cool. How would you describe the gameplay?

First off, Team Ico games, Ico, SotC, and Last Guardian, the controls aren't the best. Still better than Rockstar games, but it can sometimes be infuriating, especially trying to "drive" the horse.
In this game, there are no enemies besides the Colossi, 16 I believe, so until you find one, it's all exploration and gorgeous scenery. Pretty mind blowing when you find one. There are 2 that I can think of off the top of my head that are actually small, but most of them take up the entire screen. Then, it becomes a puzzle of "how do I trigger this colossi into an action or position that will allow me to climb on it". Then it's find the weak spot and start stabbing.
Music is some of the best.

Without going into any spoilers, essentially the entire game is a series of boss fights. You have to locate the bosses in the world and then defeat them. That's the only real gameplay.
The boss fights are all very unique and are as much puzzles as they are combat.
The combination of the unique boss fights, the atmosphere of the world, the subtle but intriguing story, and the soundtrack make it so memorable.
Top 5 video game soundtracks of all time IMO.

Awesome. I beat the first boss on SotC way back when and never played it again. I'll pretty much be going in blind.

I bought Shadow last month

I’ve pondered picking up SotC previously thankfully I waited it out.

I'm excited to play it. I also need to play Ico. I heard it's great as well. They kinda look similar, graphically.

Similar graphics and feel, but two totally different games. Ico is basically one long escort mission.

Yeah, I remember playing a demo briefly on PS3. A guy I've always respected on YouTube/Twitch claims it's his favorite game of all time. I need to try it out.

Once again will likely download both... Will definitely be playing SotC at some point.
PS Plus has really been doing a great job of getting at least one high quality game out a month for free

The scaling and climbing is palm-sweat-inducing for damn sure.
Games like Uncharted 2 and SotC are not for those with a fear of heights

Playing SotC on a gigantic TV with a kick arse sound system would be a truly magnificent experience, especially if it's your first ever play through.

SotC is an absolutely amazing game and maybe I could give it another shot after so much time has passed.
I bought it right after the original release and the first and second playthroughs were incredible because it was just so much different than any other game. It still is.
That said, there's not a lot of secrets or hidden nuggets so I found replay value to be somewhat low... but, especially now that it's free, it's absolutely a game that everyone should play through beginning to end at least once. The colossi battles are so epic that you really feel like you've accomplished something.
I remember spending literally hours wandering around looking for all those little lizards

You definitely need a 3-5 year gap before playing it again.
Some of the later boss fights I had completely forgotten how to win and had to go to Youtube. Some of the puzzles are legit tough even by today's standards. There's one fight in particular I asked myself on reply "how the hell did I beat this the first time?"
