I have a few monitor questions.

I'm moving my PC and PS5 off of my 1080P, 60Hz Tv in a few weeks. I plan to get a 32" 1440P and at least 144Hz. Does a curved screen make a difference? VA or IPS? Will I be able to tell the difference between 144Hz and 165,180, etc?

I'm IPS all day

VAST difference going to any of those from 60hz. Now going from 144hz to 180hz is not nearly as noticeable (I didn't really tell a difference going from 165hz down to 144hz)

Back in the day IPS was better, but for years now VA is better as the tech has caught up to match the response times of ips.

If you want HDR you'll need VA as well.

I think my monitor has HDR and is IPS? Don't really know for sure bc I've never cared to try it

For a monitor that sits two feet in front of your face, yes. For a TV that will be 6+ feet away? Don’t get curved.

Historically, VA had better contrast and IPS had better color representation. At this point, that’s still only true at the low to mid range. Very high quality panels of either of those approach one another’s strengths, though you have to get very high with VA to remove all dark level smearing. TN sucks balls.

Unless you’re a professional esports player, no.

As for HDR, it still kind of sucks in 2022. That’s something I would worry more about for your next device down the road.

You can now get OLED gaming monitors (not TVs) if you want HDR. I actually have this coming in tomorrow which I ordered back in March:
AW3423DW

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/alienware-aw3423dw

Now I need to decide if I go ahead and pull the trigger on a 3080 or wait for 4xxx. I assume when the new cards come out later in the year that it will be a crapshoot all over again in getting one.

I would avoid the OLED monitors, the Mini LED's are quite a bit better.

Samsung actually just dropped the best monitor made to date last week in the Neo G8 and G7.

LINK

I would highly suggest exchanging if you still can.

ETA: Nvm yours is a 1440p ultrawide, gross. Why in the world would you spend that for 1440p in 2022?

I was all geared up to white knight for 3440x1440, and then I realized you said “spend”. Yeah, that’s a spicy fricking price

Grossly overpriced for the OLED marketing and nothing else. 250nit brightness is so fricking bad, and 400 for HDR is useless.

Yet we're learning quickly Mini LED is much better for monitors. Not to mention HDR400 is faux HDR, 600 is the minimum spec recommended to actually use and see HDR.

Seems to be working great. I downloaded a benchmark software that puts a load on the cpu and it didn’t cross 77 C. What did this software do? I have no idea. But I played a few games and it stayed below 70.

Depends on the software. If it was Cinebench, it does an image render which quite literally maxes out every core and thread of your cpu. If you loop the test, it basically becomes a stress/torture test.

I have no desire to game at 4K right now. I prefer 1440p so I can do max/ultra settings with a good framerate.

Why? Because it's good... There is a reason why there is 2-3 month wait time to get these.

Lol at thinking LED (even mini LED) is better than OLED.

Thanks Josh. Just to be clear, Im not in the market for a $1300 panel. Lol.

I was looking at a 34” ultra wide but I read consoles won’t look right at 25:9 aspect ratio.

So I think I’ll find a 32” curved 1440 16:9 144Hz(or higher) va or ips. Any brands to stay away from?

My 3440x1440 was about $600, and I consider myself a high end gaming enthusiast. Don't let that shite frick with you

Don't go UW with a console. It can be a minor aggravation on PC at times, depending on the game. And that's in an environment I can basically tweak to my heart's content. Consoles aren't that.

To revisit, are you going to be sitting that close to your screen? Go measure from where your eyes will normally be to where the screen would be, then post that number here.

Pretty much every company has duds and studs. Monitors are one of the most difficult things to research and compare. But once we talk through your needs a bit more, we can try to point you in the right direction.

Yeah. I’m getting g a desk. I play on a tv right now and sit about 10 ft away. I will be much closer once I have the desk, sitting within feet of the monitor.

As someone who sits at a desk with a 32" UW, 34" standard is going to be a lot. If you have any tendency towards motion sickness, it will get you sick if you're playing anything with camera effects (bob, shake, etc). I couldn't play the Tomb Raider reboot for more than about 20m before I got a headache. I could never play more than 45m or so in a sitting because I would start to get nauseated. Just something to consider if you haven't already.

But to get back to more objective issues, I'm sure you posted it already, but remind us: which console are you using (so we know which ports it has), and which games do you tend to play most?

PS5. I am still playing Ghost of Tsushima, Destiny 2, I will get the next COD after having sat out the last two. I figured HDMI for PS5 and DP for PC. I don’t tend to get motion sickness but then again, it’s been a while since I was close to a panel.

On the one hand, next gen is just around the corner. On the other hand, that's what we all said two years ago, and we all see how that worked out

I’m debating giving up my mining cards. It was fun/cool while it lasted, but it’s gonna be a minute before something like that comes back I think.
