I worked until 11 last night doing Christmas lights so I could get an entire Saturday to play this

Ready for you to join the party Fox

Played some last night after I got in from dinner. About 2 and a half hours.
Did not feel like FF to me at all which is sad.
Game seemed like it will still be fun though.
The typical open world quest that I hate are there though.

I just wanted to note how awesome the soundtrack is... It's also a nice touch to buy CDs from all of the older FF titles to listen to while driving or to use in the portable Walkman.

Also...I started out getting frustrated with some battles being really hard.
One thing to note. Hold defend and parry. Once I figured out how important defending, phasing, and blinking was it all clicked and the battle system is amazing once it clicks.
Also, get Ingis' regroup technique ASAP. It is essentially cure all and so far is the most important tech I've learned and you can get it very early

I will sit in my den and play all day Saturday guilt free. I plan on picking it up tonight
Man, I just was so burned by 13 I'm really hesitant but I'm committed.

Yes for sure.. I had to over level I felt like just to be able to compete; then again when you're going after hunts and stuff they're supposed to be more difficult. Like I've mentioned a few times I just sucked at combat but it is starting to click. Starting to really get the hang of defend and parry as well. I'm also recently on the regroup train.
Anybody else find themselves not using magic at all? I feel like I'm going to be screwed if it comes time to face a boss with just magic or something.
Sidenote: anybody do the friends of a feather side quests? That whole dead-eye quest felt like I was sneaking into Jurassic park. It was real real cool the way it was all set up and played out to me.

I preordered this from Amazon back in June but for some reason it didn't ship until yesterday. I should have it in my mailbox by the time I get home today. I can't wait to get home play but this day is just dragging on.

I beat every FF from 1-9. Even the Jap ones that I had to get translated ROMs. Never played another one of the series.
I love the turn based stuff but this game looks pretty incredible.
Is the real time battle a turn off to turn based fans or is it enjoyable?

I'm big on turn based but also understand that it's more of a thing of the past. While this isn't my preferred way of battle it's not turning me off. Whereas like first time I played 12 I was really not into the battle system at all.

They do have a "Wait" mode that slows things down a bit. It completely stops the action while your character is stationary. Allows you browse menus, change targets, etc while in combat.

This might have just sold me. Thanks

I really disagree with this sentiment. Persona 5 is a great example of how it can still work.

I like turn based, but I don't think it's something they should be married to. They try and freshen it up but really that's how they soured me on it in the first place
10 was perfect
12 was a fun change of pace
I thought the paradigm shift in 13 was interesting and unique but if you want fast paced action then why make it turn based at all?

I'm interested to go back and play 12. I remember liking it at first but not finishing it because it got boring. It's often described as a single player mmo and that does sound familiar.

It was boring because there was too much nothing in between events and plot points
It was a grinder in terms of leveling up. One of the worst actually, but if you like final fantasy it was fun. The ultimate weapons were hard as balls to get

I do remember this. It's worth trying again in 10 years when that remaster comes out.

THis game is excellent. I don't even want to get into a detailed post because I'm going back to play it

They even have a whole skill tree dedicated to the "wait" mode style of combat. I'd recommend that everyone try it. It's helped me gain tons of AP and definitely improves the strategy aspect to combat.
For example you can use "Libra" to quickly determine an enemies weaknesses and resistances. You can then equip weapons/skills accordingly. You can look for enemies that are low on health or have their back turned to you in order to perform a warp strike or blind side attack, respectively.
I also love how the wait mode tells you exactly which enemy each one of your teammates is targeting, so you can plan double team maneuvers. Also, I would recommend getting the Enhancement Technique for Ignis. This allows Ignis to imbue your weapons with the element that your target enemy is weak against (note you have to do a Libra scan prior to activating this move).
