Currently at chapter 11 and I share some of your sentiments about the story.
Final fantasy doesn't work as well in the modern era. It's a decent game but nothing special.

I sat down and played for 7 hours straight today. I'm hooked. Took my time with the opening section. This is definitely a no-lifer for me.

Nooo. The remake won't taint the original, I think it will just give it a new life... a look from a different filter.
The 15 battle system has been praised. Carry that to 7 with updated graphics...same story.. and enjoy it.

Sorry. Just don't see it. It's perfect as it is. If they wanted to do a version like the 3ds zeldas, I'm all for it, but a remake? I think it will be a huge failure

We will just have to wait and see. I've been on back on board with square since they got their shite together beginning with fixing 14. I feel as if they are listening to their fans more than ever now.

All it's going to do I sell out the arse and bring that nostalgia back for so many of the fans that any flaw it may have will go by the wayside.

It definitely has flaws, but it isn't a bad game in any regards.
It's definitely something I'll likely replay and will continue to pick up through DLC release.

So I beat a level 54 world boss at level 13 because I dragged it to the edge of its "zone" and it got unresponsive so I just wailed on it until it died. The EXP gain was nowhere near worth the time investment.

I'm currently 22 hours in and still on Chapter 3, just got to meet Gladiolus' sister. I've really enjoyed the story so far, although I will agree with the earlier criticism from Fox regarding Ascension. That aspect has really underwhelmed me.
ETA: I also really dislike the magic aspect of the game. The fact that it is friendly fire is ridiculous and makes it pretty much unusable, in my opinion.

About 20 hours in and I'm on chapter 3. I stopped doing the story missions and have just been doing all the hunts. Really digging it so far.

Disclaimer: got home from a day on the road last night and was totally wiped and stupidly tried to start this game an hour before bed. Not much made sense and I'm sure a lot went over my head, hence why I'm asking this question.
