Dude your a bard of course your going to look a little queer like. You should try different classes. I don't even think you've made it to the dungeons yet. I really enjoy tanking its challenging to try and keep each and every member of the mob from attacking your allies. Leveling to level 16 can be done in a few hrs so it's not like your throwing away that much time invested already if you change classes.

Any tips for a newbie at this and other MMORPG type games?
I am a level 10 Archer. This whole game just feels overwhelming with shite that I have to think about.

I'm gonna keep at it a bit more, but you're right, it's extremely overwhelming. Idk what half the screen is for. I've really just been roaming around exploring. The one time I got in a fight with a shrub I had to like select it, then press attack, then it let me swing my sword every 5 seconds. Took 5 mins to take the damn thing down

the biggest "hump" to overcome in an MMO is to not feel "overwhelmed" .. these games are massive, it's even in the name!
For you I would just say stay the course and follow the main story line, at about level 15, 16 the game opens you up to dungeons which really make the game fun, and you will start grouping up with people who you can just goof off with.
Also, pay attention to what moves do (this is really for later in the game), because after a bit you will start being able to "chain" moves off each other to make them stronger / more useful, but that's later on.

You need to be using your abilities to take down mobs.. these can be set to your hotbar for quick access
(go to your menu, go to the character screen, go to "abilities" go down to your abilities, click over into the abilities, when you are hovering over the ability hit Square? and it should give you a menu with "add to hotbar" , hit that and add it to the "quick" hotbar" at the bottom of your screen (or wherever you put it))

Thanks for the advice.
The game is really fun, and the amount of things to think about, while overwhelming, makes me want to play the game more in order to figure them out. I just need some direction.
I'm also assuming that some of the compatibility issues with console version will be worked out by release. I don't mean performance issues, but things like map size, text size, and other HUD qwerks are annoying. I know you can change the size of some thigns, but trying to navigate the map and trying to read NPC text is annoying.

I agree with Andavari also don't just snug the storyline of the game though go out and try crafting the first time I went through the game I said Fock crafting and blazed through the story to get to level 50. I'm having much more fun making and selling stuff on the markets as well leveling up my charachter and going through the story at the same time.
Also at level 16-20 you will get a chocobo and will be able to travel between areas pretty easily by teleporting to the aetheryte crystals and if you end up not liking being a bard try a mele class or a magic class. Its really easy to change classes you just have to go to the guild and speak with the recptionist of the guild and accept the first quest. After completing the first quest equip your new weapon and you are then your new class.

and I use controler
When I say "hover and click" I saying, move your cursor over it, aka: use the d-pad to highlight the abilities
and you still have your hotbard, it's the thing that allows you to hit your abilities by pushing your right or left trigger, and the the Triangle, Square, X, or Circle button

Niice. We are trying to grow. We are working on housing ATM. Just need a solid group who are online a lot to help us with our treasure maps. We have probably collected 50 or so just waiting for the right time to use. Did a few with 5 of is the other night and brought in about 10k each for 5 maps so it was a quick 50k and would have been more if we had more members in the party. Put away about 2mil between 6 of us or so.
