I picked it up today and played for several hours.

I'm really enjoying it. It's taking time to adjust to some of the new changes, but I'm dealing with it pretty well. It's still so foreign that I only control one character at a time in battles.

I've got no problems with Square taking a few risks, I just hope that it provides an enjoyable experience throughout. I kind of preferred these games before voice acting because some of the dialogue sounds so fricking cheesy. Specifically anytime either Vanille or Hope opens their mouth.

What kind of self respecting male calls themselves Hope, anyway? I guess Squall, Cloud, Snow, and a myriad of other Final Fantasy names don't sound any better, now that I think about it...

I like the game but for me so far these characters aren't on par with some of the previous final fantasies. It's just hope vanille and snow are way to kiddy right now and I don't like how that forces the other characters to play sorta a parent role

Yeah, Sazh is the shite though... The voice actor for him is great... Most of the others are sub-par. Check that, Vanille's is sub-par... Hope is just a whiny little coward bitch.

I kind of felt the same way about the characters as you guys did through about chapter 3. I feel from chapter 4 on, the game has done a pretty good job of developing the characters. It's been interesting watching them change over time. So just give it some time, they get better (even Vanille and Hope).

Yeah I agree that the character development is getting better as the story goes along. Particularly Hope. I hated that whiney little douche a lot at the beginning. Sazh is definitely my favorite character so far. That dood keeps it rill.

Yeah the more I've been playing, the more I like Sazh. He's really well done. Lightning isn't too bad either.

I just think it's funny that, for me, the most realistic character is the dude with a bird living in his afro.

Right? I just made it to Disc 2, and Hope is actually turning out to be a matter-of-fact little dude. Only because of Lightning though. Sazh is definitely one of the best voice-casted characters I have seen in any game thus far. And that chocobo in his hair cracks me up when it pops out at random arse moments.

I have found that the synergist and saboteur roles are a staple in this game. When used right, they can almost guarantee victory. I think I am going to give all the characters the basic low tier abilities of every role, but keep them proficient in two.

For example, Lightning is staying offensive, so she will stick with the COM and RV, and Vanille is going to be the MED/SAB. It kinda blows that we haven't been able to play much with Snow to this point...

I just got it today and I'm really enjoying it. Sazh is a great character. Snow is a little too cliche for me so far. The battle system is great, I didn't think I would like it but the more I play the more I love it...so fast paced.

I got to where the game "opens" up and some of the environments are ridiculous.

Open fields with all kinds of opponents running free on them. Quite a few intimidating looking enemies. When you first arrive, you aren't a match for some of them.

Hope isn't nearly as annoying as earlier. Lightning rubbed off on him A LOT. Vanille's voice/dialogue still makes me cringe.

what is it with the god damn arm motions for the female kiddy characters. every damn JRPG has them tiger woods'ing after every damn line. who the hell acts like that in real life?

excuse the rant, enjoying the game otherwise.

I would say that XII was a horrible installment in the series, and a lot of people never liked 8 and 9... X-2 was crap unless you were a chick in my opinion.

This game is definitely worth it though dgnx6... It would definitely be a first-thought recommendation for almost anyone. Only people that wouldn't like it are the mind-fricked MW2 heads... MW2 is a great game, don't get me wrong, but your entire game library doesn't have to consist of one game.

Rant over...

Seriously though, this game is an instant classic IMO. Much like X was, but better.

I gotta admit man, Ill take linear gameplay with content over FF7 style, fly around in the highwind til you figure out wtf to do gameplay.

I'm still in Chapter 3, but I like it a lot so far.

The fighting isn't as mundane and is now far more complex than before. Even some of the 'gimmie' enemies can give you the fits if you don't apply at least a slimmer of strategy. Let's just say I've died twice now in the first three chapters...once fighting the Shiva twins and once on a random fight. Those guys can pile up some attacks on you if you're not careful with your HP.

The characters are a little overblown right now, but like some have mentioned, I'm sure they'll straighten out after a while.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to upgrade my characters...do I focus them or keep them balanced (in terms of CP's).

So, far, this ranks up there as one of the best FF's to date. Very happy.

Personal choice... I posted what I am doing as far as that earlier on this page.

What I will say is that it will give you more flexibility as far as paradigm effectivity... But the way i am doing it (selecting two classes for each character to excel in, while giving them the base set skills in all the others) Gives me a balance as well, in that I can play my strengths really well, but if it comes down to it, I have a base to fall back on.

Just depends on personal preference and your own strategy style.

I am in chapter eight, and the characters are straightening very nicely... Hope isn't a wimp anymore, Light has taken a chill pill, and Sazh is still the shite, even though he and Vanille (who,as I have mentioned, is still a BAD arse) are depressed as shite.

I'm not really into the story to much yet. Just sorta seems mundane right now with everyone running around going to different places running away from the army. I'm sure it spices up but I liked how it was in ff10 where it seemed like the characters had something to do when they were going to the temples.

Yeah the story definitely shapes up really nicely (as do the characters). I just got to chapter 11 and the game blew my mind. The visuals of that chapter (like some others) are outstanding and you finally get your first taste of what the game offers.

Have fun with chapter 9, that chapter took a lot our of me. One big battle after another.

I finished the game. I'm hoping I can go back and mop up some of the ci'eth stones I haven't gotten yet. Some of those frickers are damn near impossible to take down.

I will forever miss the old days with Final Fantasy 4-6. I don't think I'll ever experience anything like that again, RPG-wise. I'll always hold those games up on a pedestal no matter what happens. That being said, this game gets my seal of approval. It was definitely linear to a fault, but the battle system and the environments held me in. I have to say that this wasn't my favorite storyline in the series, though.

*SPOILERISH*

It was definitely a departure having the party divided for such a long period of time. I was getting a little irritated having only two people in the party at a time. Felt like I was hanging by a thread in some spots. Lightning was always my bruiser, so I hated leaving her to hang out with Sazh and Vanille for long stretches. Snow emerged late in the game to become my favorite player character after being Lightning for the majority of the time in Gran Pulse.

Also: Fighting Vanille's Eidolon gave me fits. That son of a bitch didn't play fair. Fang did a really shitty job of covering for me, especially with some of those moves 8,000 arm man could pull out.
