Just took down Air Buster. Think I have enough time behind the game to make a preliminary judgement. It's phenomenal
Good
- Combat is a blast. It strikes the perfect balance between complexity and simplicity. Materia system is awesome and upgrades are easy and intuitive. Game is just really fun to play, especially once it all clicks and you have all your shortcuts and shite memorized
- Localization is fantastic. Nothing has stuck out to me as poorly translated or too Japanese, and the writing and dialogue are fun/witty with some good humor overall
- Voice acting, especially for the female characters, is wonderful. Real charm and authentic emotional conveyance. I honestly thought the VAs would be bad, but I'm really pleasantly surprised. Sephiroth's VA isn't nearly as good as the original one, but still fine.
- World design is great. Really cool to look up from the slums and see how much detail there is.
- Music (duh)
Bad
- 30fps
- Minor NPCs look like PS2 characters
- disguising loading screens with the hold triangle prompt or the squeezing through cracks. my GOD this shite gets old. at least have cloud grasp the lever and put some effort into pulling it while you're holding triangle. it's even more immersion breaking when you hold triangle and cloud just stands there for the first second before starting the animation.
- Lots of technical issues. Slow rendering, texture pop-in, and "the catch-up game" aka you go to talk to someone and the game is clearly trying to catch up to you for a couple seconds before dialogue initiates
- chapter 6 was arse. about twice as long as it needed to be
All my cons are pretty much nitpicks and not too cumbersome - the good stuff vastly outweighs the bad. Assuming it maintains this level of quality all the way through, this will def be in the running for my GOTY. Didn't think it would be so good or that the gameplay would be so fun, it's probably the most enjoyable game I've played thus far this year. Could it possibly top LoU2 or Cyberpunk? duh duh duhhhh.
I really hope the side stuff doesn't get stale and that the story doesn't jump the shark too badly. hopefully Square reads all the stuff about people shitting on them and they decide to crawfish and make minor story changes only. Would be a shame for them to kill this golden goose

yeah, but they're probably conceptualized and designed with some basic animation work already done at this point. Mocap/voice isn't that monumental a task

Lucretia is Sephiroth's biological mother and the woman Hojo stole from Vincent before locking him in the tomb for 30 years. She's the main reason Vincent wants to murder Hojo.
Shera is Cid's assistant who later becomes his wife. He blames her for stopping the launch that would have gotten him into space. She saved his life at the cost of his dreams.

Okay I was thinking GOTY but was afraid to put it out there. I know there is a lot of time left but this has the nostalgia going for it in a pretty solid year.
