I agree. I played FFXIV in original beta and release. It was just stale compared to WoW and FFXI. I'm probably going to blindly try ARR when it's live. I used to do every Closed/Open Beta I could but I would get burned out doing the early levels once the game became live.

Something that heals or something that tanks I would imagine. So Paladin or white mage. Isn't this the standard for an MMO?

Best advice I got was to just play what's fun to you and not worry about "what is needed". You'll find a role.
So gladiator and marauder are your tanks, pugilist and lancer are close range damage dealers, archer and thaumaturge are long range damage dealers, and conjurer is a healer. Whatever fits your style. I started off with lancer, but enjoyed thaum, pug, and archer. Conjurer wasn't my style, but I've never tried to heal in a party situation. No interest in tanking.

the problem with xlv is that it's FILLED with old tanks.. and by filled, I mean... really really badly filled, EVERYONE wanted to be a tank.. going tank is NOT the way to get into parties.

How many different tank classes do MMO typically have? Just one?

FFXI has quite a few Tanks. Ninja, Paladin, Warrior, Monk, Thief and Rune Fencer can all tank in various degrees.

2,3,4... depends really
a good MMO makes all of their tanks good for specific things. The problem XIV ran into at the end, was that PLD was NEVER a viable option.

1.23 was just PLD and WAR. I couldn't see any other job doing it. Just no way to spec the other's correctly?

not even remotely enough content by the time xlv went down for there to ever be another chance for another tank..
