My son is turning 12 and wants a computer. He wants to play Minecraft. What I'm trying to understand is, is there any difference in being able to play it on his xbone? He's telling me there's different worlds and stuff on PC. I'm just not sure.
Help me out guys. I'm not a gamer so I'm not familiar with the nuances.

If you get him a gaming PC he will be a huge nuisance to everyone around him, but then you'll understand the nuances.
ETA on a serious note, Minecraft is better played on PC, but you have to weigh the costs.

Minecraft is on an entirely different level on PC. I ran a server on here for a bit that was modded.
You can mod it to be basically any game you want on PC. I have even seen terrible versions of Rocket League done through it.
You aren't going to get that on xbox, not that you want to though.
There are some amazing mods out there that are very educational, but I doubt he wants to play those though. Probably wants to play all those stupid mods that youtubers pimp out.
Modded minecraft is all about the processor, ram, and running 64 bit Java. Go heavy on ram and a good processor, you can spend a little less on a graphics card if it is just for minecraft.

the PC Minecraft edition would completely blow away the Xbox version. I think it would be easier to use, as well, due to a mouse and keyboard being superior for a game like this compared to a controller with sticks.
Minecraft is huge. I made this thread yesterday about how educators are using minecraft to teach students
LINK
minecraft on the xbox is severely LIMITED compared to PC.

My soon to be 10 year old got a computer for Christmas. He actually has played minecraft-pc version on a 2in1 tablet/laptop dell since he was 8.
He also plays the console versions and like mentioned above the game has a lot more ways to play on PC.
The only thing with the PC is the obvious ability to see and do things more easily on the PC then on console. Obviously they will also interact with other people and the dangers that could come from that. I grew up in a house in the 90s with a PC and a dad who was/is not tech savvy and I know what I did. I would urge you to research some ways to shelter your kid on the PC a little bit if possible. It pains me to write that.

If you want him to actually learn something about back end coding and such, then the PC version is the way to go as he'll be able to Mod and do other more "back end" type stuff.
If you just want him to throw shite together with blocks, then XBox will be fine.

As a software developer and someone that's been around computers since the late 70's I can't emphasize this enough.
Just research the issue, and don't let the "boogy-man" dissuade you from creating an opportunity that could potentially be beneficial to your child.

Nearly any PC with a dedicated graphics card will be able to run Minecraft. It's not that intensive a program.
That said, if he eventually wants to run other games on it, then you'll want to get something a bit decent.
Right now, nVidia cards are better than ATI for video, but Minecraft won't even notice the difference.
Do you have a budget?

The problem with this is it sounds like his son wants to move beyond normal minecraft and get into modded minecraft. Some mods can really hammer ram hard. 8GB at bare minimum ram if he is going to be playing a lot of mods.

And to add to that, if he wants to play on a server in a couple years then he'll need the power

Just steppin' in to post this:

You set up the LSU TDGB modpack, didn't you?
My kids and I still play on that pack.
I bought them all store bought machines, but would have been better off building them a custom machine. I had to reduce most of the graphics settings so it wouldn't be so choppy.

Yeah, lol
That was a fun little pack we all setup. I play occassionally on another pack that has a few less mods that kept crashing on us in that one.

You can get an amazing computer for 1k. I highly recommend you and your son build one yourself. If you can use a screwdriver and read..you can build a computer.

Give me an idea on where to start with that
