Engadget: Sony to integrate Discord chat into PlayStation

another win for cross-platform gaming!!!
https://www.engadget.com/playstation-discord-integration-181459496.html
PlayStation users could soon have another way of communicating with each other. Sony recently announced that it was partnering with Discord and that it will be integrating the service into the PlayStation Network early next year.
"Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together," said CEO and President Jim Ryan.
We're not sure yet how this integration will look like. Presumably this means that there'll be some kind of Discord chat interface that'll let you interact with your friends on PSN either through voice or text, though it's unclear if there'll be a fully-baked app or a more limited implementation.
On top of that, Sony Interactive Entertainment made a minority investment to Discord as part of its Series H round. The service, which was popularized by gamers, has over 140 million users. It was almost acquired by Microsoft earlier this year for at least $10 billion, but talks appeared to have died down for now.

What is discord? How different is it than just being on a mic in a party?
Posted on 5/3/21 at 1:36 pm to TexasTiger1185
Discord is a far superior voip service then anything else offered right now
Someones mic too loud? I can lower your voice volume on my end without affecting it for anyone else.
Hot key muting/deafening
Just all around more robust

True but it also will fix a huge problem with PC to PS5/4 cross play. Sony does not have a system in place currently to have cross play party chat. Like Xbox does with PC.
For example if I want to play with some PS5 friends I have to use the in house game chat of a cross play game, which is normally terrible. Since I am on PC.
(I use ps remote play to get around this)

What is discord?
that's discord.

Don't worry, you aren't missing much with the xbox/pc cross party chat, it's absolutely aids if you're on PC
I wonder if Microsoft unsuccessfully purchasing discord will keep them from adding Discord to their consoles in the future

Discord ended talks with Microsoft in April. It was kind of shocking, because Microsoft was offering $12 billion per Bloomberg. Discord's revenue hit its max this past year at just $130 million.
To walk away from an 11 digit buy out is bold, so we can assume Sony was hanging out by the back door. Discord also is looking at a public offering.

I mostly play on console so haven't used discord. Why else is it so loved. I can do the features you listed already with xbox party chat

It’s just better okay. Deal with it.
The thing about Discord is this. It’s not necessarily just a voice chat feature. It’s a server that’s open 24/7 unlike a party chat feature that you have to create every time you turn your system on. One server can house an infinite amount of text channels and voice channels. And each channel can be themed to different topics. And each server can be policed by admins and moderators to make sure each channel stays on topic and bans people that violate the rules of your server.
Then there are bots that you can integrate into your server that can do an infinite amount of things. Like policing your server to posting tweets from your favorite Twitter accounts all the way to stupid little chat games.
You can even livestream directly to your server for the members to watch you if you want instead of streaming directly to twitch or YouTube.
Now get the frick out of here with your Xbox Live party chat.
Until you use Discord, you really won’t know the true value this adds for gaming. Especially in the cross-platform realm. 95% of the time, for Warzone at least, if you have a mix of PS, XB and PC people, you have to use the shitty game chat functionality. Now, PS and PC people can sit comfortably from the discord server. Hopefully, XB gets this functionality as well in the future because it will definitely streamline the process.
ETA: I suggest creating an account. If you have a favorite streamer, more than likely, they’ll have a discord server you can join with all of their other fans. Don’t watch streamers? Well, your favorite game will more than likely have its own server you can join. Here’s Call of Duty’s server. Tell me if it’s anything like your Xbox Live Party Chat.

Everything finchmeister08 said is a reason and honestly the bots are cool.
Here is why it is not cool.
1. Discord is also used by Black Live Matter to organize
2. Discord is also used by White Nationalists to organize
3. Discord is not just a gaming thing. Which opens the door to thought police.
3. It is awesome with the lack of advertisements, however besides investment money the only revenue comes from $10 Nitro subscriptions. With 140 million users, it only managed $100 million in revenue.
4. Discord is looking to go public, which will change the revenue needs. Greed will eventually kick in and advertisements and/or mining of user data for profit will evolve.
5. It is only 6 years old and has had a pandemic bump in popularity that will decline as the world returns to normal.
Discord is cool now and I use it. My prediction is it will not stay cool though as it sells out.

Those first 3 points are so fricking stupid

i know, right? don't join those servers.

Or make your server private, another great plus of Discord.
I boost my server because we love the ability to add custom emojis and gif emojis
Discord has essentially replaced Groupme for us as well
