As a huge Earthbound fan, I was aware that Itoi used many pop culture references in the game. This is a pretty cool video showing where he got the inspiration for the music in the game.

The Beatles were important to the soundtrack, but really it's a lot of influences. one of the tracks is a complete rip off of Johnny B. Goode.
