Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age

So I'm downloading the new Dragon Quest game that dropped for the switch. I never played one before. What should I expect as I kind of bought this on a whim

It's probably the best rpg on new systems. I beat it on PS4. Make sure to beat it 3 times

It's the way the game is set up. You don't fully beat the game until the third time you beat it. But each time you "beat it" the game is different and the world is changed.
There was a really long thread on the game last year that we all talked about it.

I played it on PS4. It was alright. DQ games are pretty rudimentary in terms of the battle system. The music is usually pretty catchy but the same in most games. They fricked up the PS4's music, so this time around it is fully orchestrated and much, much better.
If you are really into it, as another poster alluded to, beat it up to three times and you will discover different things that you did not find in your first couple of playthroughs. Mind you, it's a pretty long game (~56 hours give or take just for the story). That's not even counting grinding on Metal Slimes (you should look up guides on this if and when you get the chance) or exploring around the world for secret items/etc. Also, the casino in the game is incredibly addicting, so watch out for that.
Oddly enough, it's lower on my list of favorite DQ games but it is still good enough and I am almost tempted to use my coupon that I was planning on saving for Pokemon Sword on it (but I probably won't).

All of this!!!
It's a JRPG, so it is turn-based. Know that going in, as that is how DQ games in the main series have always been.
If I had a Switch, I would be buying it again and playing through it once more (apparently there's a good amount of bonus content from the PS4 version).
I wish I could prepare you for Sylvando, but there's no good way to go about that

The Switch has become a monster for JRPGs...I got this on Friday, but still want to beat Fire Emblem again, I have Final Fantasy 9 almost done, Started Final Fantasy 12, and also bought Ni No Kuni last week.

Played a bit last night and am liking what I see so far. As a huge fan of jrpgs I'm shocked I've never played a Dragon Quest game

May I go ahead and recommend VIII next, if you plan to play others from here?

Why three times?
The whole "Beat it 3 times" thing is a bit overblown. The first "ending" is just a bit of a fake out.
The credits do a full roll after you "beat it for a second time", but it allows you a chance to solve the world's problems a different way. That part is what some people do end up skipping or not trying.

This game is on my list. I'm on the fence whether to get Switch version or PS4.
Is there a big downgrade in graphics on Switch?

Without doing any research im gonna say it's the same. The graphics on this game are well polished but shouldn't be system intensive

So is 8 on the switch?
I don't believe it is, but I wouldn't be shocked if it ends up on there based on the success of 11.

Yes, but it is nothing major. I played the demo, and it felt like mostly less foliage and a drop in resolution.
The Switch version also has 16-bit mode, so you can play the entire game like an old SNES JRPG if you want.

Played the demo. I'm sold on the Switch version. Excited to get into it, I've put this one off for a while and need a good JRPG!

Bumping this thread because I'm about 20 hours in and I love it. My only complaint is, they really dropped the ball on the amount of music. Dragon Quest orchestral scores are always soooo good. But it's basically 2 songs 90% on the time.
Other than that, I'm loving it.

Agreed on the music. I'm especially spoiled after starting DQ and then playing FF7r. But I'm finishing up DQ and it's still a fun, if easy, play.

Yeah, the Overworld theme is way too repetitive in 11. Same with the town themes.

This and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition will be my next Switch games. Need to get through some others first.
