This is Furukawa," Nintendo wrote on X/Twitter. "At today's Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date."

We were assuming such, but it's good to see confirmation. Now that Nintendo has gotten out of the Home Console + Handheld Console business, life should be much easier for them.

I was JUST about to get us a Switch for Christmas...

I don't think this is surprising. Would have been a huge debacle if not.

Would anyone have been surprised if Nintendo had decided to NOT go backwards compatible and then convinced their fans that this was a good thing?

My question is whether this only applies to digital games or if they will still have a chip slot on the new one.

Hopefully chip. Don’t buy any of our games digitally. Way more fun to give your kid a physical copy to open than some lame arse download

I buy physical because I have multiple kids and don’t want to lock a game to one account if I am getting something for the family.

I wouldn't have been surprised.
But this is the one thing fans have been pretty unanimous about. I'll defend the graphics choices, the input choices, launch game choices, and the dont go third party choice - as long as they make sense.
Regardless of what you've thought in the past- the Switch was pretty much a perfect generation for Nintendo and their position in the market.
I'd never defend the backwards compatibility limitation

Yeah, the Switch was pretty much Nintendo’s best console ever with the best lineup. I’m just disappointed that Mario Galaxy 2, the Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess aren’t on the system, and that’s really it, but I could definitely see them having WW and TP as a single port as a launch Zelda title for the Switch 2. That or Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom Deluxe with more sky islands in the later.

This would only make sense if there wasn't a such thing within Nintendo's ecosystem as the Family Group.
Why digital titles can't be shared among family group members is horse shite.
