The game all feels a bit overwhelming to me.. as someone that never played D1 I pre-ordered D2 way back and only played The Red War. Now I've just been doing catch-up with the other campaigns and of course Shadowkeep. No idea where to really go from here after I do Shadowkeep.

Yea you are coming into quite a lot of material all at once.
Crucible and Gambit are basically just PVP stuff you can do for fun. There is some good gear and quests around them, so they do have rewards, but if you don't enjoy them, you don't have to play them. I would recommend doing The Recluse quest in Crucible because that gun is basically the most OP gun in the game right now.
Iron Banner is a version of Crucible that happens I think once a month or something. So it is just an event that happens. It is fun and can give you powerful gear, but not something you have to do a ton of if you don't like it.
Once you finish all the campaigns, you definitely want to go through and do all the raids. They are some of the best parts of the game. The old ones won't be too hard with your new light level, but they are still lots of fun.
After that, the main grind is for growing light level, working for different gear and weapon quests, and just doing the different activities that you enjoy. Activities like the Managerie and the Vex Offensive are very fun to do.

I've never played anything on a computer until this game
I'm slowly working towards mouse and keyboard but my fingers are hell bent on not making the change.

Thanks man! Can you explain quickly how making new characters works? I'd like to just go ahead and make a Hunter and Warlock which I've never tried. I would start at 750 LL, and could just ignore the Campaigns on these characters and pull gear from Collection?

I'm going to try to play some destiny tonight

You can absolutely do it that way. The campaign and everything will be available for those characters, so you can always do them, but if you're just wanting to get additional characters up to the light level to be able to do raids with and stuff, then yes, just create the character.
You'll have to do the original opening mission from D1 which will be cool anyways. I like that mission as far as a basic tutorial/opening mission goes. If you can wait until tomorrow, go ahead and grab whatever exotic armor Xur is selling for the other classes you want to make while on your main character. Once you create the new character, you can move that armor over to them and it will give them an immediate boost in light level.
Then move your highest weapons over to those characters. At that point, go to the Season tab and open the initial level 1 season package they give you to get the armor set for the character. After that, go t collections and the "leveling" section and just pull the first green set for any item that is under leveled. Whatever the exotic you have on will probably be significantly higher for a while, so don't worry about pulling that item until you've gone past that light level.

In theory they should be making some tweaks today for Comp. matchmaking. It was definitely broken so far. I had three straight games the other day where the entire other team was 5500 glory. I wasn't even over 1000 at the time.

You have a consistent group you run with, right?
Posted on 10/11/19 at 9:39 am to Devious
Yea, we've got a group of 8 that runs pretty consistently. My schedule on when I can do things is a little sporadic, but if I'm on and you ever need an extra body, hit me up.

Were y'all able to get a raid group together on wednesday?
There will be one point in the raid, right before the final boss encounter that is probably my favorite piece of any raid. It is one of the most gorgeous settings i've ever seen. You'll know it when you see it. Make sure to take some time and just explore it. They did a hell of a job developing it.

Nah. Only four of us. Several Steam IDs, but we haven't done a good job getting everyone together.
Posted on 10/11/19 at 10:20 am to Devious
Because I'm not ready... I feel like I have to do so much shite before I even do these raids.
