In an actual MMO, you have large, open, and expansive zones that you largely explore as a solo player along with completely different instanced zones (in most respects) for story quests. Dungeons are analogous to strikes and take place in unique areas as well.

My problem with Destiny was that it was too much of the same thing over and over again. You had these somewhat large areas that you could explore as a solo player fighting the same bosses in the same order, going through the same progression as if you were on a story mission or a strike.

It just has to do with expecting more content outside of what I have already seen before.

It is not an actual MMO in that mold.
If that is what you are looking for then you will never be happy.

I don't think it is possible to make a game on the scale of an MMO with the mechanics and gameplay as Destiny.

But I still don't get what you are saying. It is the same thing as many MMOs that I have played when it comes to story quest or strikes. You have a open world and when you get into the mission it is instanced. That is exactly what Destiny does, you just don't have a loading screen.

My complaint has been the complete erasing of old content and the character I built.

From the MMO perspective, grinding is easier to accept because you always have the same character and the older content there to return to 5-10 years later. You can see and feel how you've grown as a character and a player.

This reset shite takes all that away and makes Destiny more closely aligned to the Madden Series which is FINE. But don't sell me a dildo and tell me it's a banana.

A crazy amount of will and money.

In an MMORPG it is easy enough to create vast worlds with random camps of enemies when their scripts are just see player and use basic script of attacking patterns.

With a shooter you have to plan out maps more and enemies actually have to physically hit a user. Not just a check if he is in aggro range. It would be a massive undertaking.

There is a reason single player RPGs are so long compared to single player shooters. It is just way easier to build a world over the RPGs combat system.

First of all it was 3 years.
2nd no it is not at all a subscription.
You have to buy the base game in an MMO also along with any expansion if you choose to want them.

I only paid $90 originally and then I think it was another $30 for Rise of Iron? $120 for 3 years of constantly updated gameplay isn't bad at all.

Paying $60 for Madden/COD every year is much more egregious to me.

Exactly. I am a Day 1 player and I have gotten way more than $120 in value out of Destiny. I play a lot more PvE than PvP and I'm one of the people who really likes RNG and grinding to get exotics and god-rolls on guns so I'm not excited about a few of the changes that they are making in Destiny 2. However, if they can give me a similar experience to what I got from Destiny 1 I'm fine with that and paying for a couple of DLCs down the line.

I agree. I don't even get the complaints. Once again it is not an MMO that people here are trying to compare it with but for price arguments let's compare.

If you bought the game and every expansion over the last 3 years for Destiny and FF 14, this is what you would have paid. (excluding deals like expansion passes or 12 month subscription discounts)

Destiny $60
DLC 1 $20
DLC 2 $20
DLC 3 $40
DLC 4 $30
Total $170

FF 14 $60
DLC 1 $40
DLC 2 $40
36 months sub $540
Total $680


But he expects to keep the same characters for 10 years. Makes no sense.

It doesn't have to be exactly like WoW, but Destiny is very much an MMO but only stripped down to the most grindy aspects.

Again, "MMO" can be a lot of different things. It's not a traditional tab-target MMO like WoW or Everquest, but I would certainly consider Destiny to be a form of MMO.

My point is you have one map for every planet and all the game's content takes place on it. You fight the same monsters and kill the same bosses on patrol that you do on a strike or story mission. There are no unique areas for story missions or strikes. I don't know much about raids because I never did them.

The fact that it's just the same stuff repeated over and over again gets old really fast. Patrols and story missions should have their own unique locations that are separate from the strikes.

No, not at all. Borderlands is the FPS Diablo. Destiny has much more in common with MMOs, albeit not as good unless the FPS style of gameplay really appeals to you. Ultimately that's what it comes down to. Every time I start playing Destiny, I think of how much better and more rewarding playing WoW would be, but not everyone is into the fantasy, tab targeting aspects of a lot of modern MMOs. Destiny allows a whole other type of gamer to experience why so many get addicted to the MMO genre.

For starters, the rate with which you obtain gear is much slower. Often times you grind x of y a number of times to unlock the ability to buy some item which is straight out of an MMO. Diablo is nothing like that at all. You rely on random drops via replaying the game on higher and higher difficulty levels or farming bosses for specific items.

You also have many different styles of play. You can do PvP, you can solo on patrols, and/or you can do group missions on strikes. Strikes are laid out exactly like instanced dungeons in a modern MMO. Destiny also has raids which require larger parties of players to complete.

What? There are a lot of story missions and strike areas that are impossible to get to in a regular patrol.
Also traditional MMOs are filled with boring quest in world zones that you run through over and over. I still don't see the difference.
Just that the traditional MMO is much larger. And that would be because it would be insane to have a shooter as big as say WoW or FF14.

Raids are the best part of PVE Destiny. The fact that you have not done them shows me you are just looking for some solo experience or have not played the game much. The game may just not be for you.
