Yes.
Got to 265 last night. I haven't done any side missions or Nightfall. I'm not sure what to make of that.
I did play the Crucible a bit and have done a couple of strikes.
What should be my focus, now that I am +260, to be more efficient at leveling?

Agree on the milestones. Random exotic drops will usually net you a high power level, but sticking to the weekly milestones is a must.

I would grind the heck out of public events. I did about 12 yesterday and got two exotics. Just make sure you try to make them heroic as much as possible.

We have commented on this a number of times but you are in good shape if everything you have said is true.
To get higher, you should do all the weekly quest first and the nightfall. These are the ones that show "powerful engram" in your milestone tracker. That is how you will get items with a base power higher than 265.
Then you should complete your exotic quest chains as those exotics drop at very high power level. It is best to do these last so you can max the power you will increase. Everything takes into account your base power when dropping. You get those chains from finishing all the missions on each planet. 2 of them are very easy. 1 requires the nightfall and one the raid.

Only do this after you finished all your weekly and exotic quest chains that you can.
Now grinding public events before 260 is the way to go.

What are the challenges that show up on the right side on the screen vs left. If you complete those will it drop high gear also?

The challenges that show up on the right are typically just the daily challenges. They tend to drop rep tokens, glimmer, and XP. Similar to the old daily bounties in D1.
The weeklies that drop powerful gear/luminous engrams (Basically the same thing).

Call to arms (crucible)
Weekly Nightfall reward from Zavala
Raid rewards
Trials of the nine rewards (crucible)
Clan Nightall
Clan Raid
