Ok. I finally did it. I bit the bullet and bought a PS5 (got the MW2 bundle from PS Direct...would have preferred a simple digital edition and that's why I've held out).

I mainly wanted this thing for the DeS Remake and potential Bloodborne Remaster.

I'm making my way through it. It's beautiful. Felt weird at first because the art style of the remake doesn't feel very FromSoft at all. I know it's BluePoint and not FS, so that makes sense, but it felt very...round? I'm not sure how to describe it. FromSoft's art style generally feels very pointy.

Anyway, I'm having a blast, but I just entered the Prison of Hope. Having just this year beaten Dark Souls 3 for the first time, I have to say...the PTSD this place triggered was real.

FromSoft must have taken this dungeon design and put it straight into Dark Souls 3 - right down to the Mind Flayers being able to group you and one short you being just like the Jailers in DS3.

*shudders*

But yeah. It's fun, but I do wish BluePoint had put in a respec system.

Ive been toying with the idea of getting it for a little while. I think the problem i’m going to have with any Fromsoft game is that i never played one in my life til earlier this year when i got Sekiro on sale. I platinumed it in 2 months and i think the fighting/traversal mechanics are so different from the other Fromsoft games that I dont know if I’d be able to get past the clunky fight/dodge traditional style of their other games. Maybe i shouldnt have started with Sekiro…

I started w/ Bloodborne and then followed that up w/ Sekiro. Both are far more fast-paced than the rest of the FromSoft catalogue, but I've still thoroughly enjoyed the others.

BB and Sekiro are top 5 all-time for me. Elden Ring and DS3 are top 10-15.

I'm doing a magic/melee hybrid in DeS, so I can't speak to this in it - but in DS3 and Elden Ring you can make builds that attack quickly and have faster rolls/dodges. They feel great.

 the Maneaters

Only two bosses I had trouble with in the entire game were Maneaters and the False King. But both were user errors. Once I figured out what I was doing wrong, I was able to beat them in the next attempt or two.

I played the original back in the day and I did not stick with it. Ended up giving up on it after beating only 3-4 bosses. But for some reason I loved the remake. I couldn't put the remake down.

So these are the only fromsoft games I haven't played since they are PS only. Should I play the remastered first or is there a way to get the OG still if I get a PS5?

OG has to be played on PS3

On the remake, set the color filter to classic - things are way too bright by default.

Once you tweak the visuals the remake is superior. Except Stockpile Thomas looks like they gave him an extra chromosome but whatever.

Finished.

Gotta say, while it's beautiful (Blue Point did an AMAZING job on the visuals here...looks astounding), it's probably bottom of the rung on the FromSoft ladder for me.

It just didn't FEEL like a Souls game. That could be down to something last in translation from OG to remake, but this one just never hooked me. I finished it because I felt like I needed to IOT make a fair assessment, not because I just HAD to.

That comes down to the Bosses for me. I don't think I should have gone magic. It made this game a joke. I didn't even go full magic, though. I went Magic/Luck and used the Blueblood Blade, so my stat distro was all over the place and I still felt OP. I also didn't powerlevel, so I just leveled as I progressed naturally and it felt like I overpowered everything very early.

Anyone have any suggestions for a more challenging build for a 2nd playthrough? I'm thinking I may push through NG+ with a sword/shield combo using Northern Regalia as my MH.

All in all, I'm glad I played it for completion's sake and to see where it all began, but I've obviously been spoiled by DS3, BB, Sekiro, and ER boss designs.

I don't regret getting a PS5 for this game at all. I'm gonna go through Ghost of Tsushima next and keep my fingers crossed that Sony eventually gives us a fugging Bloodborne Remaster.

Also, if someone wants to play the OG, there are plenty of Emulators for PS3 out there that run Demon's Souls very well. *

*Assuming that you have legally purchased a disc copy of the game, of course.

Did you end up doing an NG+ playthrough?

I just did a replay (played it for the first time back in January 2022 before Elden Ring came out) with a new build and settled on strength. Once I got the dragon bone crusher it's been my primary weapon...which sucks when you are in tight spaces but I've managed ok.

NG+ has been so much more challenging than NG. The bosses haven't been terrible or anything (Flamelurker has been the toughest so far) but getting through each zone has really challenged me.

I'm trying to get platinum and am short a few rings, spells, and miracles. Also, I didn't give the magic sword to the samurai guy in 4-1 while in pure white tendency on my NG run, so I need to do so this time, however I made the mistake of dying in body form. For some reason, I thought beating all 3 bosses would be enough to negate that and still be in pure white but the guy isn't showing up for me.

I still need to do all of zone 5, and then do 1-3 and 1-4. I'll probably need to start a NG++ and beat a few bosses to get the necessary souls for the last spells and miracles. I'm not a big fan of using save files to manipulate trophies so I'll simply grind through it again to finish up.
