eta: backtracked and took out the chariot. skipped over it last time. Got my flask up to +5

Maybe it's b/c of my most recent play thru on DS1, but I totally blanked leveling up. Finally tossed a few souls at dex, reinforced my weapon and what do you know! Game just got slightly easier 
Edit: by easier, I mean I made it past the boss I'd been trying to kill on my first try after leveling up

And I destroyed people at the Belfry for some chunks. Surprised I didn't get a ton of rotten messages for spamming flame swathe.

Did we ever figure out the endgame with human effigies? I have like 30 of them and absolutely no use for besides becoming human again.

I haven't heard anything. There is no Pale Lady in this game, so I'm not sure what you can use them for.
