Witch ring lets you talk to the fair lady.

Any other benefit?

I can't remember I just remember reading all the other stuff was easy to obtain in game as opposed to that ring which was rather difficult.

Anyway for me I'm a wanderer so I chose the master key.

Maybe the pendant to trade later?

All the gifts truly are worthless compared to the master key.

Other than master key maybe fire bombs. I read if you beat asylum dragon upon first entering his cell you get a badass hammer. I think it would be hard to kill him without falling on hi head. Fire bomb and pyro combo might help. If you want the hammer

It's just me and my opinion but I wouldn't take anything but one of the three things I have listed below:

Pendant
An item filled with blocked memories. Usage unknown, but recommended first Gift by the game's director, Miyazaki.
Update: This is the only story-related gift.( 1.06 Miyazaki confirms that this is just a gag gift, the true pendant is the Broken Pendant.)

Note: Can be found in game at the altar of the Undead Parish late in the game after Reah of Thorolund dies by the hand of Petrus of Thorolund. Can be traded to Snuggly at the Asylum for a Souvenir

Old Witch's Ring
Ring given by the witch. Allows you to talk with the Chaos Servant covenant's leader the Daughter of Chaos. Without the ring, choosing to talk to her only prompts a "...?" response.

Note: You can get it from Snuggly by trading the Sunlight Maggot Helm dropped by Chaos Bugs in the Secret passage to Lost Izalith obtained by reaching rank 2 of Chaos Servant.

Master Key
Reusable key that can open any door with a basic lock.

Note: The thief class begins with this item regardless of the chosen gift. Choosing this gift in addition to the thief class will result in the player starting with two Master Keys, which is pointless, as the one Master Key has unlimited uses. While the Master Key allows you to open various doors within the game, such as the New Londo passage to the Valley of Drakes, it isn't required to open any doors as there are keys for every door in the game. If you don't pick it as your starting gift don't panic you can still get to every place without it you'll just have to find the specific key for said door.
As of Patch 1.05, Master Key is available for purchase from Domnhall of Zena for 5000 Souls, After you have beaten the Gaping Dragon.

So...I'm thinking screw Bed of Chaos

I can't even figure out to hit that bastard! I freed his "hands" or whatever and I can't get a hit marker!! I'm very close to pulling up the walk thru to figure this bastard out. Can't hit him with arrows. Can't get close enough with magic or a sword. I got really close once. Started hacking away. Nothing.

Can you summon people to fight bosses or no?

Don't fight the bed of chaos like a conventional boss.

You freed both arms?

Rush the center.
You have to aim for the ramp in the gap in the floor.

There will be a narrow branch filled crevice that you will follow back to find his weak point.

He is simultaneously the easiest and the cheapest boss in the game.

Yes.

In order to summon a phantom, you must be human. You cab only summon a phantom in an area if the boss still lives.

Look for summon signs near fog gates and bonfires typically.

What do all the numbers and stats for the weapons and armor mean? It doesn't tell you in the booklet.

some of the weapons and armor scale with your level. for example, you can look at those numbers and see if you level up your strength, weapon x will be better while weapon y is better with int.

If you are a warrior, str, dex, end, and vit are your best bets. i learned the hard way, you don't really want a balanced character in this game. you want to rely heavily on one thing. magic, defense, offense, fire, etc

yeah it stays hard, but fair. Once you grasp the controls, and all the systems in the game, you really come to love it's brilliance, and the challenge. You'll die some cheap deaths, sure, but in my opinion there is not a game that feels more rewarding than Dark Souls
