Yes, I would say this and put your skill points purely into str, vit, and end. Do not waste them on anything else unless you need a few points of dex to use a certain weapon.
This is a good basic build to learn the game mechanics. Later you can create a build with a more complicated skill scheme.

Get the master key.
All other gifts are shitty.
Tiny beings ring (health ring) gives you a minuscule amount of extra health. It doesn't regen health like the description says.

Unless you roll a thief who gets the master key by default. Then I guess go for the binocs?
