While I think you're correct as far as last gen consoles, I would say the PC release was late Beta. While the game still would have been a disappointment in a PC release, I think 90% of the overwhelmingly bad reaction was due to it being near-literally unplayable on consoles, which constituted most of the initial gamer base.
None of this is to excuse releasing a late Beta game, just to say that I think the narrative would be different.

I played through the demo and then bought the full game with Microsoft rewards points and finished up the opening quest chain yesterday. I'm enjoying the game so far and haven't run into any glaring bugs yet.
Saved and cut it off when I saw Keanu Reeves' character for the first time because it was 2 in the morning and I didn't need to stay up any later.

I ran into a bug right after the part you're at that resulted in a black screen. The auto-save was great though so after restarting the game it started me back right where I encountered the bug and then was able to move on without any issues.

Yeah I've been trying to remember to save frequently in hopes that I can recover my game if anything ridiculous happens.

I played the game through on release (PC), around 50 hours. I am playing through it again now on 1.5 and even though I really liked it the first time around, it's much better now. There are FAR fewer bugs and the AI is so much better.
The side content is this game is just so good IMO. I really enjoy the side quests and gigs, they're just a blast.

They should’ve dropped their last Gen build a long time ago. PS4/Xbone just aren’t capable of playing this game as they wanted it.

just got this in the mail from gamestop. wth is this 2-disc business to play the game? i think it's time to develop a new disc media that can hold more than 50 GB.

Already exists. It’s just really expensive and not cross compatible, so no one uses it outside of archiving

Bumping this because I restarted from scratch about a week ago, and I’m enjoying the hell out of the game in its current state. It’s still not perfect, and it has plenty of room to be fleshed out, but it’s absolutely worth playing now if you have the hardware to drive it.

I've been playing for a while now. Really enjoying the game.

I really hope people are willing to give it another chance, especially with how often it goes on sale. I think if it were released today in its current state, without all of the hype, people would be raving about it.

I never tried it when it first came out. Waited until they had actually fixed the thing and then tried the demo they put out. I don't know how bad it was before, but I've come across very few glitches in my playthrough. Nothing gamebreaking yet.

I played from release, and shut it down about… six hours or so? After The Heist. I didn’t run into many bugs, but it had issues that just made it not as fun as it should be. AI, in general, was awful, whether enemies or law enforcement. The algorithm that ran NPC generation on the street was fricked. Wasn’t uncommon to see three identical NPCs on the same street corner, which completely ruined immersion. And there weren’t nearly enough people on the street, which I think was a concession to try to make older consoles not explode. You had graphical bugs like trees melting into the ground before your eyes. I’m missing a ton, but just little shite like that that kept reminding you that it wasn’t the game it should be.
Eta: All of which has been significantly improved, being I wasn’t exactly clear about that

Yeah I don't understand releasing a game with that many bugs. When it's that broken, there's no way they aren't aware.

I think they knew, but they had already had multiple delays. I think the money folk were getting pissy, so they shipped and hoped they could unfrick things before it blew up. They were wrong.

Maybe I'll pick it up next. I'm too engrossed in Pressure Washing Simulator right now.
