This. It's programmed so the AI is always comparing itself to you concerning numerous values, particularly strength. Depending on the leader's personality (which uses RNG for a different range for each leader), it will decide whether to declare war based on these values. There is variability, and it's not very predictable, but you can't leave yourself nearly as vulnerable as vanilla BNW. If they smell blood in the water, they will attack you at your weakest, and you'll be screwed. That said, units are cheaper to produce than vanilla BNW so maintaining a viable military presence isn't as crippling a trade-off. Also, the way they maneuver their units is much more reasonable. You can't just assume you will be able to outsmart them for a significant military advantage.
If you try it, start a couple difficulty levels lower than you would with vanilla BNW.

I’ve skimmed through this thread. Damn I haven’t played or even thought about this since late 90’s and Civilization II. I loved it at the time. Reading through here has certainly piqued my interest to pick back up again.
Is the consensus here that I should try Civilization 5? Or 6?
Also if anyone could advise, roughly how long does it take to play through in terms of hours? A time range of speeding through vs being deliberate with each move.
TIA

Civ V with expansions is the GOAT, imo. Games usually take 3 to 10 hours depending on speed of play and # of turns to win. If you want games to be shorter, play on quick, and if you like to take your time with longer games play on epic or marathon. You can enjoy it on Prince or King difficulty after a few games without ever learning all the intricacies, you can attempt to master it to the point you can compete at Immortal or Deity level, or anywhere in between. If you ever decide you want to master it, I highly recommend watching some FilthyRobot tutorial and gameplay videos on Youtube. This game can be very, very deep if you want to go that deep with it.

Just scored a cultural victory with Egypt. On immortal. Stonehenge, temple of Artemis, oracle etc.
I feel like CVs are the toughest.

I skipped from 4 to 6 but I looooove 6 with the expansions so far. Careful though....I spent 7 hours after work yesterday taking over the world with Sumeria so it can make time go by real fast.

I am simply amazed that y'all can beat these games on immortal difficulty with how much the computer cheats. Kudos.

took a lot of practice and trial and error. generally you can tell by turn 100 if its even worth it to continue. and often you can tell by turn 1 if its even worth it to continue if your starting land is garbage

Do not and I repeat do not buy Civ VI for a console. I love the game but once you expose about half the earth or so it will not reload the save. I have sent the error message CE-34878 to them many times and they will not acknowledge that they have a problem. The problem has been openly discussed on the Civ forum. Again its a neat game I have been able to complete one game on tiny map but I did not stop for about six hours after returning to an initial game (having had to go one save prior to my last save to continue).

Huh, weird...I have it on PS4 but haven't experienced this. Good to know.

Been playing a lot of Arabia and they may be my favorite. They so strong with Petra and desert hills. The problem is getting Petra on Immortal. Camel Archers and Bazaars are stupid good even if you don't get it.
