do the tutorial or just create a game on settler difficulty, resources on abundant and legendary start option checked under more or advanced options

I haven't played six but general idea is:

Food makes citizens
Citizens produce science
Science allows for tech research
Mines, quarries, pastures gives Production (hammers)
Production dictates how many turns it takes for your city to produce what you ask it to.

Also: don’t neglect happiness.

There is actually distinct value in hampering population growth of cities early until you have more buildings/resources which generate happiness.

Just won an Immortal Small Fractals game with Science as Japan where I got my own island.

Ethiopia looked like they were going to win a world vote early, but I declared war and took over their city states to frick their votes

The AI is dog shite at naval combat.

A clutch hubble space telescope completion allowed me to bulb 2 GS to get Particle Physics and nano tech.

Yea. I need 2 lux, a hill ( or anything with 2 hammers), a river and a close mountain or I reroll

AI gets too many advantages on immortal. Not gonna waste my time

Need 4 cities and a national college by turn 120 at the latest or you are cannon fodder. Good luck building a library with a 1 hammer city

Obviously you want a mountain and/or river with your hill, but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. I never play fully solo, so rerolling isn't an option

It's too bad they fixed the city state worker glitch in 6 I heard

You mean taking workers over and over from nearby CS?

yah, I only do it until I have 3-4 workers and then I'm good for the rest of the game

Edit: And with Greece it doesn't matter if CS get mad at you early since you'll get them right back as your allies anyway

Enjoying Civ 6. Did the tutorial for a bit then looked at youtube tutorial videos and realized just how shitty the in-game tutorial is. It gives you the very basics of how to build/attack/move, but doesn't really go into the weeds to explain how every little detail works and comes together. I'd still recommend the in-game tutorial to noobs like me to get an idea of the very, VERY basics, but just don't worry about completing it or spending too much time on it.

Last couple of nights I started new games and played for a couple of hours before quitting without saving. Still just trying to learn a few more of the basics before giving it a real go (specifically need learn more about terrain bonuses). Like to get to a point where I can look at a starting location and map out a city & districts in my head pretty quickly without relying on trial & error.

Question - how early do I need to know what victory scenario I want to go for? Is there an unwritten rule that by, say, turn 100 or whatever I should have clear understanding of the direction I am going in for the end game? I guess the better question would be is it possible to not have a clear end game strategy until mid game and then start hammering away at those victory branches?

the higher up in difficulty you go, the sooner you need to play to a specific win-con. you have the right idea, but since you are new, you dont have to worry too much about committing to a win con early.

but yeah. at turn 100 if you have no capitals and no army, you probably aren't getting a domination win.

kind of have to feel out the map and your neighbors. if you have warmonger neighbors who want to fight over every resource from turn 50 on, can be challenging to focus on science or culture for instance.

This x100.

Did a multiplayer and AI match yesterday and I was surrounded by the 4 AI in an absolute dog shite starting spot. I forced 2 settlers out but genghis khan and ghandi had already beaten me to any settle-able spot (I was kind of on a peninsula by myself and was trying to move more into the continent).

I had to go full domination mode to gain territory back. Ended up completely wiping Ghandi out before turn like 60 and getting the choke point city that GK had settled

I've got over 2200 hours of playing Civ 5.

I suggest Persia. Combine that with Chichen Itza and Golden Ages last a long time.

FWIW, I could never get into Civ 6. I bought it early and I thought it sucked.

Nice.

Indeed, 6 doesnt look appealing. frick a natural disaster. Imagine spending 50 turns farming the enemy AI for xp because you are entrenched as frick, but then a volcano or hurricane comes. frick that

Only Persia game I tried I was a bit noob and let Japan rush my capital down when they got samurais. learned the hard way about rushing culture with an aggresive neighbor on a land map that day.

Also let it be known, Denmark has declared war on me in every game I've ever played. Danish fricks.

These dudes are legit funneling through a single jungle tile surrounded by 2 mountains into two of my cities with gatling guns and xbowmen. Also my Dutch navy with sea beggars wont let them touch my ports.

My cities were their religion and we had trade routes. He declared war on me because I denied him open borders

Thanks for the xp on my gatling guns, Harold
