Casual Playability for FF14

I am currently trying out FF14 on the free trial. I have been playing for a month(once a week). I have reached level 42 and my thirty days is about up.
Before I invest in this game, is it playable down the road for a casual gamer?
Is the end game playable without top gear? How bad is the grind for playable gear?

Yes. There's a huge section of the player base that plays through each new MSQ patch, then takes a break for a few months until the next one.
I haven't played really since I finished up Endwalker, but with 6.1 dropping this month, I'll pick it back up.

The gear comes pretty easy. The harder modes of Raids, Trials, etc. are more about skill and mechanics than raw gear score like WoW or Lost Ark.

There's not really a grind, outside of each expansion's legendary weapons. Most do that grind for the look, not so much the weapon item level.
I know there are a few other folks on here that play/have played FFXIV longer than I have so they may have a different perspective.
But I really don't see FFXIV being a "grind" type game like WoW. At least in my experience.

FFXIV can be played however you want. Causally, Grind fest, single player, hardcore raiding, casual raiding, RPing, Crafting/gathering.
Just pay your $11 and have at it. You don’t have to rush to get the latest and greatest. The amount of content the game has to offer is ridiculous and relevant even for a solo experience.
You are still in the base game. Once you get past the first expansion the game becomes what makes it so popular today.
You do not have worry about endgame gear yet and when you get to that point you will pretty much be ready to run whatever.

This is very true, and they're adding new features in the next patch April 12 to further make the game solo friendly. The story is a great ride, highly recommend 14

The best story of all MMORPGs hands down, and one of the best stories of any type of RPG

Too add, the free trial doesn't have a time limit. You can play your sprout heart out until you're done with the Heavensward expansion.

Thanks for the info. I have enjoyed it so far. I'll keep at it.

Glad you're enjoying it so much. What class and server are you playing?

FF14 is extremely playable if you just play casually.
About the only thing that you probably wouldn't be able to due is Savage Tier raiding.
For everything else, just park yourself in Limsa Lominsa and queue away.

I’d say I’m pretty causal. Log in once every like 10 days right now, just really starting the new expansion because I made a new character sometime last year. You can do everything at your own pace. Like someone said probably the only thing a little prohibitive would be the savage content but you can still play all of those trials as it’s normal mode too.

I will say this. Once I was the top feral Druid in my entire wow server in 2v2 and 3v3 and 5th in pve. I quickly grew to hate mmos. But FF14 is a pioneer. It has stories, quest that matter, characters you care about, and series relevant fights in raids that look like a blast. It’s basically a new type of mmo. Hybrid main line FF but mmo gameplay. And that comes with ALWAYS a barrier to entry although it seems lowest ever in FF14 since the community is akin to dark souls. I don’t play it because agin do not like mmo style but it s definitely worth it for the story alone as a true FF game.

Major update today so I'll probably jump back in for more than casual play. Excited to try the new PvP modes.

I spent last Saturday crafting. I had no idea all of the crafting and gathering trades were tied together.
They seem to level pretty fast, so I am going to catch the professions up to my current lvl of 43 Warrior.
It might make the game slow, but seems to have an entertaining quality of its own.
Plus I am a little burned out on MSQ.
Also with only playing once to twice a week, I have a lot of Levee Plays to use up.
I am definitely enjoying this game. The last MMO I played was Star Wars The Old Republic. Before that Everquest back in 1999-2001.
This is a completely different experience.

Right before taking a pre-6.1 break, I was getting into crafting as well. Got Alchemist to 61 and Blacksmith to 48/49 I think. All of them are tied together nicely. You'll level very fast with those leves until you get to the beast tribe quests.

The raids look fun as hell. When I was at the top of wow it was wrath of lich. Maybe it’s just because I’ve been a huge FF fan my whole life but the raids I watch look 50x cooler than ice crown citadel or ruby sanctum

They are. When you get to Savage level content, it gets insane in terms of mechanics. That's why I tank as a Gunbreaker. Much easier to do most mechanics

I’d love to play but my soul would never allow it. After you put it in the amount fricking time it takes to be a top feral Druid in 3v3 and 2v2 and top 5 pve + many other respectable characters and they launch cataclysm raising level cap 80-85 rendering all that time worthless, you just can’t do it again lol
