It took a lot longer than expected, but here is my troop vs. troop table:
These are all lvl 5 vs lvl 5, so take that into account if you ever, for some reason, feel the need to use these numbers.
These numbers do not account for ranged vs non-ranged weapons, nor do they account for the fact that a lot of damage is "wasted". I would have to write a simulator to accurately account for these variables.
So here is what the numbers do take into account, and what they mean:
Each troop's attack power is pitted against each other troop's health, and the result is the number of seconds it takes to kill the enemy. The effectiveness against each enemy's armor type is accounted for, as is the amount of spaces the troops require. For example, it takes one Centaur 5.25 seconds to kill one Hammer Dwarf, which is calculated as (HD Health / (Centaur Attack * 100%)), or 1550/(295*1) = 5.25. It takes one Hammer Dwarf 1750/(280*1.5) = 4.17 seconds to kill a Centaur (the 1.5 accounts for the HD's 150% attack vs. the Centaur's medium armor). So, one on one, a HD scores 5.25/4.17 = 1.26 against a Centaur. The final bit of the calculation is the number of slots used, and the HD takes 2 while the Centaur takes 3, so a somewhat full battle would be something like 60 Centaurs vs. 90 HDs. So this 50% numbers advantage for the HDs makes the final score 1.26 * 1.5 = 1.89 for HDs vs Centaurs. The Centaur score vs. HD can be calculated the same way, or just take the shortcut 1/1.89 = 0.53.
So what does it all mean?
TLDR: higher scores are better, so find the enemy troops across the top, then look down the column for the highest scoring troop that you can build. I see a lot of Griffins, so I will probably start making Centaurs until I can afford to upgrade to high level Shotgun Dwarfs or Savage Ogres.
Or, more likely, none of this could actually play out in battle and it was all a huge waste of time.

But since gryphons are flying wouldn't they kind of slaughter the savage ogres since they can only attack ground targets...

Yeah, I didn't really account for ranged vs. non-ranged weapons, so I probably should have left off the Savage Ogres in my TLDR. They do look like they'd wreck house against everything except Griffins, the dragons, and the choppers though.

What do the numbers across the top mean you moron

The numbers, or the letters? The letters across the top are short for the different troop names, and they are the enemy troops. The troop names down the left column are your troops. A number greater than 1 is good for your troops, and less than 1 is bad for your troops.

has anyone gotten any farther with the blue portal?
I still can't beat E. Im thinking of switching my base up again to mimic the ones at the top of the leaderboards.
also, i bought a pack of the protection flags just to see what they do.

I haven't gotten past B yet. I kicked that SunnyTzu guy again. They never donated the shards.

what about the people who have donated but are inactive?
i saw a guy had been off ~25 ish days.
do we boot them if/when he hit max occupancy?

I don't see why not. If we make it to capacity, then we probably should. Do the protection flags keep us from getting attacked? I bought one. Or are they for attacking and protecting you while doing so?

i think they gove you a 4% damage reduction to your troops while attacking. I had them last night and got attacked 4 times while asleep. they didn't do anything during defence.
