Live chatted with them to ask them to check shard drop. I average 30 a day and only had 7 today. They are nice and said they would check. Hopefully it will be better soon.

Don't know how to work it, but the blue portal is now open with the update.
eta: Went through 5 waves of heros. Got victory but had troop losses, but 2800 xp and 10 shards

Ah sweet! Glad I was wrong and that thing ended up being cool. I got 1200 xp and 70k gold in my 5 waves.

I just ran the portal. I got a bunch of mana and some XP. Not sure how it works but if you lose troops you have to rebuild them.

I ran it a bit ago and got 7000 gold, 2000 xp and 10 shards again. Yes you have to rebuild your troops. It's just like being attacked by someone.
eta: Also looks like once you get past A, it unlocks B (which is a little tougher) and so on to C, D, etc...

Each letter has five waves of heroes and fighters that attack your base. You get XP after every wave. Finish the waves and you get gold or manna and XP and possibly shards. You do lose troops so you will have to rebuild them

I've gotten 35 shards so far today by doing the blue portal twice and raids.
