I used to do this but it isn't worth it.
SNES games have batteries in them and will eventually lose their save function, and on top of that it's just better and cheaper to buy them on wii. If it's not available in anything other than original format, emulate it and get a 360 controller to use with your PC.

does this hold true for N64 games as well?

Pretty sure all cartridge games have an internal battery for saves.
Fwiw, I have about 100 various N64, Genesis, and SNES games and every one saves just fine.

You know, this thread made me realize how little I actually know about the SNES. I never actually owned one. I had a NES, a Sega, a N64, Xbox, and Xbox 360, not counting PC.
I've played the popular games:
Star Fox
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Mario Kart
Street Fighter
Mortal Kombat
