Que the "Nerd," and "This is why we get no respect" comments.

Anyways, now that that is out of the way.

See here: LINK

Fun read, that makes a ton of sense.

Also, it's not a game. There's more multiplayer strategy in sudoku. Connect Four was entirely solved, twice, two decades ago. The first player either wins or is an idiot. There's a sequence of utterly unbeatable moves, meaning this isn't skill, it's extremely crude abstract pointillist color-it-in. Even without the unbeatable moves, it's built entirely around mutual spoiling tactics. You don't work toward cunning victory -- you repeatedly frustrate each other's attempts to get anywhere until one of you screws up and the other finally gets to win and leave. That isn't a game, it's a simulation of a failing adulterous marriage.

Games that Ruined Board Games for everyone else:

Snakes and Ladders
Connect Four
Battleship
Risk
Monopoly

Risk

I have a love/hate relationship with this game. I love it, until about half way through when I realize that every time I play, the dice loathe me. What's that, I want to invade a territory with only 5 units and I have 20...win the territory with 4 leftover, just to lose it back the next round. That's the type of luck I have every time I play that god forsaken game.

Kind of the point too. There are better games the include dice, but reduce the luck element. I would actually say Catan is not a good replacement for Risk, since its dice element is problematic as well. Small World or El Grande are better options.
