Go for Combat Training and keep playing that on Recruit on every map until you get a feel for the maps and gameplay, as well as guns and perks that you like.
Gradually level the AI up to test your skill, but beware that Veteran difficulty is probably harder than the real thing.
Whenever you are ready to plunge into the actual game, go for it.

Jump into the fray. play obj games so you arent the main focus. stay away from Demo clans. Pick up the good guns you find like comando, galil, and Famas. Stay to the outside and learn the maps.

black ops just takes a little while to get used to, you should be fine it you practice a bit in combat training, just whatever you do, do not carry around a granade launcher takes away the fun of getting kills
