Yeah, the numbers dropped after the original, mainly because Zelda II blew something awful. But that doesn't mean the overall sales were anything less than respectable.
they were "respectable" based on name recognition and later bundling. Similar to the Super Mario 2 fiasco.

Pumping them out every year or 2. . .sales lagging. . .long hiatus. . . They knew another stinker would sink the series for good . . .in the balance, OoT delivers

Series saved.
