I dunno, just that all the crazy stuff they did - between the mask stuff, the 3 days, all that - made it feel different as a Zelda game. Not bad in any stretch of the imagination, just... different.

Skyward Sword is the closest Zelda's come to an RPG imo, and even then that's a bit of a stretch

sales dropped after the first Zelda, for good reason. The Gameboy version did well, but that had alot to do with bundling and the lack of non-Tetris titles at that time.
Not counting that GB title, there was a 6-year break between LttP and Ocarina. That is pretty significant.
After OoT there is a Zelda game every year or two.
Like I said it saved the franchise

It stands alone in a good way. Gotcha.
The race against the clock stuff was awesome IMO. One of the best scenes is seeing the Skull Kid sitting by the tree alone. Was simply the best graphics I have ever seen on the N64.

Just because it took them forever to develop OoT doesn't mean the franchise was in any position to need "saving".
Yeah, the numbers dropped after the original, mainly because Zelda II blew something awful. But that doesn't mean the overall sales were anything less than respectable.
