I'm looking to start a single player game and I'm leaning towards the throw back route.

I cut my teeth on BG I and want to either pick it up or maybe try one of the later games in the series I never tried.

Any recommendations or thoughts?

If you like those style games, you should really look at Pillars of Eternity. It's a GREAT game (imo). The graphics are much better than the old BG/BG2 with just as good of story lines and the same gameplay style.

Neverwinter Nights has more akin to Diablo than Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (ok maybe more like Icewind Dale), but thanks to the packed in toolset, it has near endless replay value beyond the stock campaigns.

I would suggest going with BG1 and then proceeding to 2. Play PoE if you want a somewhat more modern take on the old formula. Really, the enhanced editions of BG1 and 2 make the game look and feel modern, but the pre-rendered artwork is not redrawn for high resolution displays so the default view is incredibly zoomed out.

BG1 and BG2 is like working your way through the Mass Effect series. Everything pays off and builds off previous actions. It is like playing a character in fantasy series of novels.

And then there was this horrible bug that ruined the end of Mass Effect 3... but we don't talk about it. Its like ship cancer.

I thought Neverwinter Nights was arse when I first played it... but the additional campaigns and material that came out after that move it into a solid play.

I like POE but I haven't really played it enough to go all in on it. It seems like a fun change of pace game to the modern RPGs.

I have II remastered. Theres a downloadable txt doc you can get that will show you every decision to make to be each girl characters love interest. Convincing Jahira is the hardest I think, but wurf .

Aerie is EZ. Only one I haven't done is the Drow girl. I never even take her into my party. I need to do an evil group one of these days.

Banging Viconia is life. Hot blue body and she might end up killing you while fricking.

SPOILER FOR BGII

I just remembered the lart in the drow city where the main character sleeps with some drow bitch to maintain his cover. When she demands to be satisfied, one of the dialogue options are, “I’m all for THAT!”

If you care about story and dialogue get Planescape: Torment. It is without a doubt the best written game I've ever played.

They are all good. As are the Icewindale games.

Planescape Torment is the best IMO.

BG 1->2 is the way to go. If you want something more combat heavy, Icewind Dale is underrated.

Thanks for the advice!

I picked up BG1 and BG2 this weekend...maybe an hour or two into BG1 and having a blast, this was definitely the right way to go.

SO is not going to like this Monday night gaming that's about to go down.

It’s very story driven but it’s a damn good story.

The Neverwinter Nights series still has the template for tropes that are very hard to play as in real D&D:

Fallen Paladin (Blackguard) - Lady Aribeth from Neverwinter Nights

An actual relatable Chaotic Evil character - Bishop from Neverwinter Nights 2

A truly relatable Neutral Evil character - Ammon Jerro from Neverwinter Nights 2

In addition, the expansion for Neverwinter Nights 2, Mask of the Betrayer, is the only game I've played that can actually make you philosophically angry at the story, in the way that they use the Wall of the Faithless.

It basically implies that believing in a truly evil power is better than not believing at all, because if you are an atheist your soul is thrown into a massive wall that gradually turns you into nothing until you are just another piece of it.
