Friend at work swears by this series. I played the first one a bit and was extremely turned off; however, AC3 looks INCREDIBLE.

I skipped 1 and 2 - went straight to AC: Brotherhood, loved it, great game.

The first one started cool but was very repetitive. I would recommend reading the plot on wikipedia and skipping it.
Dive straight into AC II and play from there. Hands down, my favorite series ever. Can't wait for III.

Play 1 just because it sets up an epic story and the graphics are top notch. But no reason to spend too much time on it.
You can just immerse yourself in AC:2. Best game ever. Brotherhood might be my favorite in the series despite it being a smaller setting. Playing Revelation now and it's pretty good as well.

I've said before, but II and Brotherhood really felt like 1 continuous game. Brotherhood starts literally the second that II ended.
Rome was just the next Italian area to venture in and all of the same players were present. Even the bad guys were a linear progression from II. And Ezio's abilities pick up where you left off and get better.
I would just treat II and Brotherhood as a two-disc game!

And did they do a great job with it or what? There were tons of notable and historical landmarks that littered the city, and the Vatican district was made beautifully.

I'm glad that they're making some changes with the series and making a full sequel with AC III because I was starting to get a little bored by the end of Revelations.
Solid series... but 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations are all the same game with a few tacked on editions from year to year and a new hub city each time.
a new character, location and time period should make things feel fresh again.

The first one had a good story but the gameplay was extremely tedious and repetitive.
The second one was much less repetitive and much more fun. Brotherhood was even less repetitive and introduced some more good story.
haven't played Revelations, yet.
I really enjoyed fighting in the middle of the crusades in 1, but that is not until the very end of the game and it is pretty much a chore just to get there.

No doubt. I would say that for Venice and Florence, too. I visited all 3 cities last year and recognized a lot of landmarks just from the game. It was so similar (and they did make changes to the city layouts so they flowed better) that I immediately fired up the games when I got back to re-live Europe.
Rome was interesting because it was the most different from the time period in the games to today. Today there is almost no open space in Rome and the popular landmarks stand out more. Back then something like the Coliseum was in the middle of a big open space. Very cool to see those differences.
Florence and Venice are much more unchanged over the years.
If you are into Italian/Religous history, conspiracies, revenge stories or ninja like skills then you really need to check this out.

Absolutely. 1 is brutal to get through, but I think it's critical to have everything come full circle at the end of Revalations.
