Just had my buddy's roommate tell me this. He claims to be a D&D expert but then he says stuff like this and also thinks you need to roll once per turn. How many of yall have heard stuff like this?

It really depends on how in depth you want to get into it and how much you want to leave up to the DM. I have played a version like this with my 6yo. For any standard edition not a chance.

Like only once?

You do pretty much have to always roll at least 1d20 to perform an action on your turn, and sometimes you have multiple actions per turn.

You could get away with only having two dice to play the game by using math: d24 (covers: d12, d8, d6, d4, the rare d3) and d20 (d20, d10, d4). Could be wrong on that, as I only did it as a thought experiment a while back.

He just watched the D&D episode of Community. While the episode was fantastic the D&D portions were not even close to be accurate.

I used to play when I was a kid. We had 4, 6, 8, 12 and 20 sided dice I believe.

That's such a stupid take.

The d20 is the "arbiter of fate". It determines whether or not something happens.

The remaining dice determine the severity and impact of that fate.
