Cool, yeah, I'll just do a run through of the story and shelve it for when my daughter decides she wants to jump back in to it.

I'm envious. Which 2025 releases have you played thus far? Which are the "major releases" you're avoiding? Here's a bit of an extensive cheat sheet to help jar your memory, if you need:

LINK

I'm not avoiding any games, but in that list, the only games that really move the needle for me are KCD2 and Donkey Kong Bonanza.

Split Fiction looks good if I had a partner to play it with.

Ghosts of Yotei interests me (not on the list yet), so that makes three games. It at least looks a bit like a retread though. If you removed the protagonist from the screenshots, you wouldn't be able to tell if you were looking at this game or Tsushima.

Did not know Silent Hill F released. I have never been huge on surival horror games. It looks "interesting," but I don't know if I'll play it outside of a sale.

The new Sonic Kart racer looks about 5,000x better than Mario Kart World, but in no way is it worth the $70 price tag.

I really think the 2000s-2010s were the pinnacle of gaming

To be honest I would have to agree, as an 08 kid. (yeah yeah get it out of your system I know you old dudes hate zoomers) My room is full of old video games, I have dreamcasts, an xbox, a ps2, gamecube, and a big CRT. Modern gaming genuinely blows now, and I realized that old video games were genuinely better. It all started when I emulated silent hill 2 on my pc, which led to me buying my first playstation 2.

Ain't that the fricking truth

In these discussions, I find it interesting where people draw their lines on complexity. What, specifically, is it about those PS2 games you're so fond of that would make you say they are "better" than Mario64? Or Super Mario? Or Pac-Man?

Super Metroid is one of my favorite games, it is not specifically the generation. The main reason I'm more fond of the playstation 2 is because I'm a horror fan, and horror games generally peaked in the ps1-ps2 generations. I do enjoy Mario 64 and Super mario world, it's just things like the ps2 have more games I enjoy playing. It is also alot cheaper to buy games for, usually the older the console the more it takes out my pocket. (I work at mcdonalds lol)

I get where you're coming from

Horror is an interesting genre, and I think the problem you're describing crosses mediums. For a long time, mostly due to a combination of censorship and special effects limitations, most horror films left a lot more "to the imagination" than modern iterations do. While more horror adjacent than horror, both Jaws and Alien are classic examples of movies that wanted to use more effects to show the "scary" parts, found the effects weren't good enough, so they abandoned them, only to find that the movie was better for it. I think we had a very similar evolution in horror games. With the rise of the ability to "show the scary", we've moved further away from the psychological horror that a lot of fans of the genre would prefer.

No shite

I don’t consider any of your systems as “old”

Hell those were the ones that were out when I stopped playing games until I had kids

I mean, the PlayStation 2 came out 25 years ago. That’s quite a bit of time. I grew up with the PlayStation 3 and ps4.

Would make sense. Silent hill is my favorite horror series, and the fog was only added as a hardware limitation but made the game significantly scarier, as you could not see most of what was around you and had to wander through. At the same time, horror games (and most games) feel lazy and not as high quality. The constant stream of remakes is annoying too when they could port the game and patch it up a bit if necessary.

All relative when many were playing the nes and snes from 40+ and 35+

Funny how the mind works.
